To ask how much you pay for babysitting?

I am lucky enough to not normally need to pay for babysitters, so I'm not sure if I am completely out of touch, but how much would you expect to pay for someone to look after 2 kids, from 5pm to midnight, with the kids expected to be in bed from 7ish? Please also indicate roughly where in the country you are.

£8.50ph to our nanny if she babysits on Fri or Sat night. She drives herself home.

SoleSource · 16/09/2012 08:29

£25 in total for those hours. My DS is fast asleep before she gets here. Plus taxi.

SoldeInvierno · 16/09/2012 08:29

£5 per hour to 15 year old neighbour. South East.

janey68 · 16/09/2012 08:33

£7 per hour. We have an 18 year old dd of a neighbour who babysits at the moment. She'll be off to uni next year so I'll seek out someone else for then. I find local students are a really good bet- they need the money and also have the energy and will to play games and do role play with my two before bed time.

Rubirosa · 16/09/2012 08:39

We pay £20 for 3 hours, so 5pm-midnight probably £45 - adult babysitter, Bristol.

Shinybits · 16/09/2012 12:25

£10 an hour London, crb'd nvq3 nursery worker and uni student. Who drives home. I don't understand paying for cabs unless you live in the sticks. I'm sure none of your employers pay for your transport home from work. If you can't afford to get home safely your not asking for enough money, don't take on the work. Also, what's the deal with paying different money when they are asleep, what if they wake up? Do you charge the awake tariff until they go back to sleep? What if they wont sleep until after their bedtime do you believe the babysitter?

valiumredhead · 16/09/2012 12:27

£8 per hour 5 years ago in London, now we've moved £3 per hour - both teenagers.

LeeCoakley · 16/09/2012 12:37

I charge £5.50 - crb, TA, L4 early years, 1st aid etc in the south east. I wonder if I could get more?

Cartoonjane · 16/09/2012 12:43

That's a long stint and the kids will be up for at leat two hours. I am on the south coast and would pay definitely £35 for that. I think any less is really taking the P. I'd pay a bit more if I could afford to but not so much that you set a precedent that you can't keep up.

Shinybits · 16/09/2012 12:47

Remember that it's not just your kids they are trusted with, it's your house and property. It's a big responsibility.

minsmum · 16/09/2012 12:48

My DD babysits for neighbours £5 ph n/london. So £35 for those hours

slatternlymother · 16/09/2012 12:48

£5 per hour in Cornwall. They are my son's nursery nurses, so I know they are excellent should a sticky situation arise.

Midgetm · 17/09/2012 10:52

minsmum Can you send your DD my way please - I have just lost my cheap sitter to university wistful sigh

ByTheWay1 · 17/09/2012 10:56

We do "returns" - there's 4 of us mums who babysit for each other on a returns basis - costs a cup of coffee, some "naice" biscuits and a lift home.
