To not buy new wellies for Ds?

ItsOnlyRain · 15/09/2012 15:06

Ds is required to bring (and leave) wellies to school. They do a lot of stuff outside so this is not an unreasonable request. I bought him some really nice ones last year which they did not return when he broke up for the summer holidays. I just assumed that they would be there for him when he started back this September but apparently now they have lost them and are saying I need to buy new ones? AIBU in saying that if they had returned them to me/not lost them then this wouldn't be an issue and it is there responsibility to either find them or pay for new ones to the same quality as the last?

YWBU not to collect them before the summer holidays.

Don't punish your child for your lack of organisation.

scarlettsmummy2 · 15/09/2012 15:14

Yabu. You should have collected them on the last day of term.

MrsMiniversCharlady · 15/09/2012 15:15

By all means make a stand, but it will be your ds who suffers when he can't join in with what everyone else is doing and/or get wet, muddly feet.

These things happen. Buy cheaper ones next time.

ItsOnlyRain · 15/09/2012 15:15

It wasn't that I didn't collect them, they didn't return them and they are all kept in a room which parents do not have access to. FWIW no one brought them home throughout the summer. I would NEVER punish my child for something that was my own fault.

You are right to be annoyed but lets face it the school isn't going to replace them. So bite the bullett and buy him some more and ask that they school is more careful next time.

ItsOnlyRain · 15/09/2012 15:18

Its just the fact they were so dismissive about it that annoys me. That they didn't even see that they had done anything wrong.

Why don't you go in and ask the head about where all the wellies are, and have him/her make some enquirers, I doubt they've all gone missing if no one collected them, and unless the custodian has their own football team of kids no one would want that many pairs of wellies. Someone has moved them and knows where they all are surely.

theodorakis · 15/09/2012 15:44

I was hoping you had my dilemma and would be told you were totally reasonable.
"come on squeeeeze in, no they are not too small, your feet can't have grown already, just give a good heave and you'll be fine, there you go, it's only for a little while until you fit the other hand me downs, no they are not too small, stop making a silly fuss, no sweets for silly fussers, are they better now? Good, well done for being so sensible and grown up"

But of course you are not BU at all, if you can't sueeze i9nto some old ones I think you will have to get some more. Get them a few sizes too big.

NevilleBarnes · 15/09/2012 15:44

I just don't understand why anyone buys expensive wellies for children. They grow out of them so quickly. Surely cheap wellies are just as good? Sainsburys etc sell them for around £3 a pair. Then if they get lost it's just not such a big deal.
I agree YANBU to be annoyed at their dismissive attitude though, I would be too.

NevilleBarnes · 15/09/2012 15:45

Grin theodorakis

theodorakis · 15/09/2012 15:45

We can't buy them here in Qatar and it only rains about 20 times a year. Didn't know supermarkets sold cheap ones, will stock up next time.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 15/09/2012 15:49

Have they lost everyone else's wellies then? How do you know they were in this cupboard at the start of the holidays? Won't your ds have grown out of them anyway?

Kaekae · 15/09/2012 15:50

He would probably be due a new pair anyway now if your bought them last year surely? Children's feet grow so quckly! Not the point I know, but you would be having to buy them anyway?

Hopeforever · 15/09/2012 15:51

The school budget is too tight to worry about Wellies and the staff are probably too busy

You need to buy some more and make sure you collect them at the end of term

NevilleBarnes · 15/09/2012 15:53

Blush sorry op, assumed you were in the UK thinking about wellies, rain etc.

NevilleBarnes · 15/09/2012 15:54

oops, confused. Is it gin time yet?

As you were.

imnotmymum · 15/09/2012 15:56

Sorry should have known better OP, the cleaners would have just plopped them somewhere. They will be somewhere. However they need to be bought.

Thingymajigs · 15/09/2012 16:01

I go through this on a weekly basis. My eldest goes to a residential school and not only do I have to contend with wellies, hats and gloves going missing but large winter coats, trainers and sometimes an entire suitcase of clothes never return. Not to mention toys and games. It's infuriating especially when they call to kindly suggest that I send him with a coat in winter and I have to point out that I've already sent 4 that I've never seen again. Angry ok, rant over. Grin Kids do lose things and there really isn't anything you can do about it unfortunately apart from buy some new (cheaper) ones and perhaps suggest to the school that the wellies could be stored in a more organised way.

GobblersKnob · 15/09/2012 16:01

You should have asked for them at the end of term when there was a chance they would still be found.

Trust me, your child will lose endless stuff at school, it is not the schools responsibility.

holyfishnets · 15/09/2012 18:48

Replace them once and then after that they have to hand a replacement

WelshMaenad · 15/09/2012 20:01

Shit gets lost in schools. This us why I buy dd cheap Asda wellies for school. They have lost two pairs so far but hey ho.

Incidentally, do your child's feet not grow? I'd be delighted if shies bought for DD last September still fit, but she will insist on getting bigger, the swine.

DottyWottyDooDah · 15/09/2012 20:25

When you do buy new cheap ones write his name clearly on the outside with sharpie. Then if any bugger nicks them confusion arises it can be quickly rectified.

WorraLiberty · 15/09/2012 20:30

It wasn't that I didn't collect them, they didn't return them and they are all kept in a room which parents do not have access to. FWIW no one brought them home throughout the summer

So there's still an entire room full of wellies in the school or did the cleaner/caretaker take it upon themselves to pick up and throw out 30+ pairs of Wellington boots? Confused

Anyway, what are the chances of them still fitting your child now it's September?

Goldenjubilee10 · 15/09/2012 20:30

Asda have really nice black ones for £6!
