The smart phone addict, how many hours do they waste every day, desperately checking if someone's liked their comment, retweeted their inane drival, or replied to their post.

Think what other more productive things they could be doing in that time, like looking where they are going, paying attention to the road when driving, and not looking like a right shit when their mates are trying to talk to them in pubs etc, the list of better things they could do is endless.

Why don't you Google it? I know you don't like to use a smart phone but we're not here to make up the deficit.

goldenlula · 15/09/2012 11:20

Dh was fined and points on his licence for using his phone while driving (talking on it not texting ect), so was my brother. Both have learnt their lesson and now have handfree.

BlackberryIce · 15/09/2012 11:22

There you go.... There's at least 2!!

Go and google the rest!

SummerRain · 15/09/2012 11:26

I read academic research papers on my phone
I shop on my phone
I use the internet to find phone numbers (such as an emergency tyre service when I had a flat last week)
I bank on my phone
I read and respond to emails on my phone... Personal and work related.
I usr my phone as a personal organiser.
When I'm at work (mystery shopper) I use my phone to take notes as its less obvious than pen and paper... People think I'm texting
I use ot with my kids yo research stuff online, recent examples include dd wanting to know how yo draw a shark, ds1 wanting to see free running, ds1 wanting to know what other planets look pike, etc.

I also use it to unwind on MN and other sites and play games... But that doesn't negate the many positive productive things I do with it.

SaraBellumHertz · 15/09/2012 11:26

Agree no one should be using their phone whilst driving but that aside who are you to dictate what people should do with their time?

Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time and all that

SummerRain · 15/09/2012 11:33

Sorry... Wandered off to parent my children towards the end of that post, came back and pressed post without spell checking.... If you want to complain about smartphones you should focus on the autocorrect. Now that's worthy of a good rant!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 15/09/2012 11:44

I'm check stuff on my phone regularly but it's usually during time that's empty and I have nothing better to do. Like when I'm waiting to pick up a child, or in a queue or something.

The only time I don't like it is when people should be focussing on others whom they are supposed to be sharing company with.

Walking while staring at a screen, absolutely, it's a nuisance and I get cross when dh does it but looking at a phone while sat or stood out of the way is no big deal.

differentnameforthis · 15/09/2012 12:34

I was pulled over for using my phone while driving. Only I wasn't using it & my call log proved it. I had my hand on the side of my face. So yeah, they do pull you over if they see you.

Tee2072 · 15/09/2012 12:48

I know two people who have been pulled over and fined for using their phones while driving. One was on a call, one was using the GPS.

I often look at my phone while walking, to check the time. Is that okay in your world, OP?

When I first read the thread title I thought it was about a skin complaint! But yes mobile phones, smart phones annoy me too. I've often seen people walking along with mobiles glued to their ear.

CaptainHetty · 15/09/2012 14:03

driving while on the phone is illegal how many people have you seen get done by police for it? I've never seen them bother anyone over it.

Several people, actually. My dad was fined and sent on a 'training course' for using his phone in stationary traffic that hadn't moved for 30 minutes and wasn't going to be moving for a considerable amount of time because of an accident. They're actually very strict with mobile phone usage while driving, but perhaps that depends on the police force in question. Besides, without stopping and asking, how do you know what people have been pulled over for?

Either way YABU, I can honestly say I've never seen all these people so glued to their smartphones that they're unaware of their surroundings or driving like maniacs whilst liking facebook statuses.

cheekybarsteward · 15/09/2012 14:16

anyway....is there an app for mn for android?

OhNoMyFoot · 15/09/2012 14:18

At least they aren't playing those awful video games Wink

ladymariner · 15/09/2012 14:26

Maybe those people are googling an on-dictionary so they don't spell things incorrectly such as, oh I don't know, how about 'society'........

GreenD · 15/09/2012 14:31

I refuse to have a smartphone. I think people get addicted to them. I have seen people in tears because they have lost their iphone or blackberry, like drug addicts who have to go cold turkey.

D0oinMeCleanin · 15/09/2012 14:34

My phone is worth almost £400 I'd cry if I lost it. I'd also cry if I lost £400 cash.

My life would literally end as I knew it if I lost my ipod, which is worth a fraction of what my phone is. I'd grieve.

theodorakis · 15/09/2012 15:33

Maybe you had better publish a list of all these things we are supposed to be doing instead so we can see the error of our ways and be educated by someone on an...internet chat forum. Irony anyone?

As an aside does anyone else now have the
"Why don't you just switch off your television set and go and do something less boring instead, sitting at home watching tv, turn it off it's no good for me so whhhhyyyyy don't you, whhhhhyyy don't you"
