To think that £15 for a bottle of nit lotion is overpriced?

Especially as it's an essential with kids. All the best lotions seem to be this expensive. I hate nits.

My doctors would give you it free if you took in a nit on a piece of sellotape to prove you needed it. I thought this was standard in the UK. Have you tried it?

Matildarae · 14/09/2012 17:56

Just use listerine( the original yellow) cover with a shower cap and leave on for twi hours is much more effective and I lot cheaper

toptramp · 14/09/2012 17:57

No but will go in Monday and ask.

get a nitty gritty comb from the doctor on prescription and just use conditioner - I never found any of the lotions worked, but the comb works a treat.

toptramp · 14/09/2012 17:58

Hi there. Whats listerine and can it kill the eggs?

Isn't listerine a mouthwash? Confused

Nit stuff is expensive, not sure about overpriced, but it's not an essential. You could do the conditioner/comb thing for a fraction of the price.

JumpingThroughMoreHoops · 14/09/2012 17:59

Get it on prescription.

No it isn't a necessity. Some children are prone to nits some aren't. You don't keep nit lotion just in case

SharpObject · 14/09/2012 17:59

I've just bought 4 bottles at £10 each for 4 heads to do a week apart as it said on the instructions.

I do use nitty gritty and conditioner weekly but poor DD2 has come home with a few whoopers this week so someone else isn't buying it for their dc Sad

lljkk · 14/09/2012 17:59

Boots comb is fine too, ime. Nothing beats cheap conditioner and several hours of combing; you can't know there are none left until you don't comb any more out, anyway. I can't conceive of buying any lotions in future (famous last words?! lol).

GrassIsntGreener · 14/09/2012 18:00

Why would you spend so much on it? That's crazy. Get a decent comb and conditioner like someone said, the nitty gritty is fab.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2012 18:00

The only one that I found to work was one called Nyda - it is eye wateringly ££.

I bought a new mousse one which still left live lice the next day (I left it overnight for good measure. ) It was crap.

In despiration (before I tried the Nyda_) I went to the Pharmacy and asked "What can I use I've tried XYZ"
They sold me a bottle for headlice and scabies (not that my DC have scabies you understand).

I was woken up at 2am by DD insisting I wash her hair because she couldn't stand it itching/stinging.

Nitty Gritty and serum in between and Nyda for a killing session

Floggingmolly · 14/09/2012 18:03

PunkinDublic. You have to produce an actual nit ?

CleoSmackYa · 14/09/2012 18:10

I've been buying stuff from Wilkos for a fiver. Clears all the fuckers bugs and lasts a few times too. You do have to leave it on overnight though.

WelshMaenad · 14/09/2012 18:19

Ugh. I've just spent £16 on Hedrin spray to treat my two, and will have to spend the same again in 7 days. Dd has ludicrously thick hair, we can't do the nitty gritty. She was clear going back into school and in less than 2 weeks has them again. Growl.

Do drs insist on seeing an actual louse? I never see them! I see the nit casings, and she gets a rash on the nape of her neck from the bites, but I have yet to see a live louse!

3in2years · 14/09/2012 18:24

We got it free from the chemist, a bottle each for all family members that are exempt from prescription charges. DH had to fill some forms out but no need to see the doc for a prescription.

charlottehere · 14/09/2012 18:29

It used to be free but not any more, at least thats what I understand. TBH I do think its essential and can't think of anything worse than combing through my 2 older daugters hair repeatdly especially the headsore 8 year old.

charlottehere · 14/09/2012 18:30

Oh good tip cleo will be stocking up on the wilko stuff at a £5. Smile

SarryB · 14/09/2012 18:37

Is anyone else's head getting itchy just reading this?

I'm in the conditioner and comb gang. Works a treat, mum used to do it every week.

PunkInDublic · 14/09/2012 18:43

Yes Flogging we did. We were told we'd get it free when we called up the doctors. So we toddled down, they then asked to see one on a piece of tape. Angry They wont look in the child's hair either. It was beyond stupid, we had to go home, whack one on the tape then go back.

Head lice treatment .....lyclear...... Is £1 in poundland here!

ontheedgeofwhatever · 14/09/2012 19:30

Actually I do have a bottle of nit lotion just in case - got it when DD was in reception as assumed it would be a necessity. She's jsut started year 2. We've never YET needed it but at least its there for when we do

Foxy800 · 14/09/2012 19:31

Hi my gp wont prescribe it, i have taken to using conditioner and nitty gritty nit comb every time i wash her hair, and it seems to be working.

Matildarae · 14/09/2012 21:22

Yes it's mouthwash but it works think its the alcohol, no doesn't kill eggs but kills every single lice and lotions don't seem too. I have used it on myself and I have psoriasis and it didn't irritate my skin. If you repeat after 7 days you will kill any eggs that hatch x
