to wonder what's wrong with PGL in this country

School has organised a trip to PGL in the South of France. It costs £695 and they are going by coach so all day on the bus each way. Why the fuck can't they go to PGL in this country? We can't be the only skint ones, surely?

Ski trips at £1400! Speechless...

BrianButterfield · 14/09/2012 16:05

Can I just say on these trips there won't be anyone getting subsidised by other parents! If you don't pay, you don't go!

NellyJob · 14/09/2012 16:07

yes our school (in one of the most ...er...economically disadvantaged areas of the Uk,) a school that loves to bang on about how truly comprehensive it is, offered a fukin ski trip to America for year 8s! about 15 children went out of 200.
it seriously pissed me off, esp, as I have 2 in the same year.

YANBU. I'd be tempted to get together with the other parents and organise an alternative trip at half the cost :o

NellyJob · 14/09/2012 16:08

apart from that, passports alone are 75 quid a throw!

AnnaFender · 14/09/2012 16:10

I went to both PGL in England and France when I was 13/14/15 and loved them both (the French ones are much much better though!) But if he can't go could you afford to send him to one of the UK ones yourself? I used to go with just my brother and the advantage of going outside of a school trip is being able to make lots of new friends and not being tied to your class for the whole thing. I wouldn't have liked to do the Med PGL with my class and teachers anyway. Felt much more grown up going away by myself!

NellyJob · 14/09/2012 16:11

I actually think these trips are organised to identify the 'nice' families.
call me cynical if you wish.

NellyJob · 14/09/2012 16:12

true Annafender.

I am not skint either, in fact I am paid OK, but I would balk at this. Even for well off people thats alot o cash!

My son went to PGL in France this summer on a sailing, watersports activity holiday.

Fare includes all travel, food, ferry crossing and all activities. A watersports activity each morning and afternoon, plus sailing, kayak instruction and qualification in level 1 sailing.

A similar sailing course near us costs £145 a day.

He loved it!
