To be disappointed to see an advert for "Tourette's: Let us entertain you" on BBC3?

I'd be very happy to see the awareness/profile of Tourette's raised (I hope that doesn't sound condescending) but the title sits uncomfortably with me. It makes it sounds like Tourette's is there for our entertainment, which I wouldn't have thought helps people. It's also doubly disappointing because it's on the BBC.

I'm happy to accept that I've missed the point and failed to grasp the irony though!

Watch it before judging the title?

BBC Three today announced a new three-part series, Tourettes: Let Me Entertain You (w/t), which will see BBC Radio 1 DJ and host of The Voice, Reggie Yates, bring together a group of young people diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome for a one-off live musical performance.

I also had a Hmm face when I heard it, but from the clips it seems to be sensitively handled and shows the amazing change music can make to people's lives. I think if that was the title but they were doing gardening I'd feel like they were making fun and encouraging it. But since the show is about young people performing music it does sit fine with me.

I don't know if YABU though. Just my opinion on the whole thing.

It's a group of folk who have musical talent (and tourettes) who have been picked to form a band....the band's aim being 'to entertain you'.

Fwiw, the programme was really great. I thought it was very sensitively handled by reggie, and yet managed to still have funny moments.

The gist of it is that all the (very talented) people on there lose their ticks when performing, and the whole point of the show is to sort of showcase their talent.

I guess yabu, but I can understand why you would feel like that after only seeing the words, not the whole show.

I watched this the other day.
TBH I didnt analyse the title - I just watched it.

I thought it was wonderful.
Some of the people featured are amazingly talented at singing etc.

Ruth Ojadi -she has featured in a doc about her life before, she has an amazing voice.
And another chap who likes surfing (cant remember his name) is fantastic.
There is a drummer too who I remember watching in a doc years and years ago - lovely to see how he is doing now.

There is a moment when all the teens featured walk into a room and meet each other and the singing coaches etc - they all set each others tics off and it was almost impossible for any sensible conversation to take place! BUT it was lovely that they felt able to be themselves and not suppress their tics as they normally do.

He was on the Chris Evans Show discussing this.
Apparently has done this before with a group of autistic children, and the programme was very well received. The point being that they are going to entertain us. They are talented people who received lots of professional input into their performances.

McHappyPants2012 · 13/09/2012 21:54

i read the title as scarism.

TicketToHull · 13/09/2012 22:12

The title alone just sounded like they were reinforcing a negative message but I'm happy to concede this was based entirely on the advert and not the whole programme! I'm glad it was done well, will have to watch it after I catch up on The Great British Bake Off

I think often the title is decided long after the programme is made. However YANBU to get fed up with sensationalist medical programme titles. What's wrong with just a documentary, why does everything have to be "entertainment"?
