So what's it all about?

OP posts:

That is completely true about the national trust. There could be all sorts of subterfuge going on there. The worry is that nobody has ever investigated it. Of course you do get those stickers, but nobody says YOU HAVE TO put them on your car. Atleast as a freemason you know who the other members are, but when I was in the NT it was so secretive that I was never sure about the others. Maybe I should have paid a bit more attention in the tea shops.

I think some members of the royal family may also be associated with the National Trust. I'm sure it goes all the way up.

ToothbrushThief · 13/09/2012 18:25

I've hear rumours about the RSPB as well

NellyJob · 13/09/2012 18:47

and about the WWFN

merrymouse · 13/09/2012 18:49

I suspect they do secret bird calls.

You'd be at work and suddenly there'd be a "twoo! Twoo!" and you'd know you were being recruited.

Presses Pom bear into caroleservice's hand (shhhhush).

Socknickingpixie · 13/09/2012 19:32

lady masons do exist they really do, at least they do in the area i live. over the last few years ive attended many masonic events with a friend of mine who has now very sadly passed away,he introduced me to a fair few lady masons and i was going to join but when it was noticed that i was pregnant i was told i would have to wait untill my baby was older as due to the rules you cant join if you have lo's because they dont like any masonic activities to take you away from your family.

Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternal organisation in the world. It is based on the principles of love, truth and charitable giving. Second to the National Lottery fund, it is the biggest giver to charity. It is open to men of any race or religion and the only qualifications for membership is to be of good character and believe in a supreme being. Apart from the charitable aspect, it also encourages self improvement by three morality stories. The secrecy is largely defunct now as it is not so important in modern society but 350 yrs ago and as recently as WW2,when Hitler persecuted Freemasons,it had more significance.
There are also women Freemasons throughout the world.

NoToastWithoutKnickers · 13/09/2012 19:57

I've heard the the only thing male masons want to know about female masons is whether they expose their left breast on their induction Grin

OhDearNigel · 13/09/2012 20:58

female masons do exist

Have lots of mason friends, have been to our local temple and am quite interested in joining. However I am heavily involved in Rotary and don't have time for both !

OneMoreChap · 13/09/2012 21:44

Indeed there are lots of people who say they are Lady Freemasons. I've met lots.

None recognised by UGLE

GoldShip · 13/09/2012 21:51

My grandad is.

Apparently in the day he was very well respected, and anyone who broke this would disappear...

I don't see him so couldn't really ask him

ProPerformer · 13/09/2012 21:54

No and nor is anyone in my family (that I know of) but I've been in a working Freemasons meeting hall!!

theroseofwait · 13/09/2012 23:33

hellymelly · 14/09/2012 00:24

My Dad is one and he is a really kind and honourable person, so I think they must be a decent bunch overall. My Grandfather was one too.

I unconditionally withdraw that.

Are there women Freemasons?
Yes. Whilst UGLE, following the example of medieval stonemasons, is, and has always been, restricted to men, women Freemasons have two separate Grand Lodges, which are restricted to women.

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 14/09/2012 09:20

GOLDEN, my Dad was not any type of Serviceman. He once told me that he been "enrolled" but didn't keep in with in. I have found all paperwork/ manual and some kind of wooden object (can't quite remember if it was a pipe or what)?

Not surprised your Dad was upset they didn't bother about him when he was ill. I find it all very interesting as The Masons are talked of commonly but never the Buffaloes.

Mrsjay · 14/09/2012 09:24
