Fairly sure I'm not. KFC in nursery school

Namechanged as talking about my employer and is identifiable.

We live abroad, I work in a school. DD is 3 and goes to the nursery school in my school.

Every week or two there is some kind of celebration - most parents are loaded, and whenever it is a birthday or something, they bring in treats. Often cakes, and buffet-type stuff. Usually party bags filled with sweets. A few times they have had a pizza or KFC delivery.

We've been relaxed about it - not ideal but I know the teacher isn't overly impressed either, tricky for her to say anything.

Today was her birthday, and the TA organised KFC and sweets in party bags as a surprise 'treat'. I think it's one thing parents doing this, but the school ordering KFC for 3 and 4 year olds when their parents have prepared lunch is not quite right.

What does Mumsnet think?

Not acceptable! Children should be eating healthily at school, not gorging themselves on fried chicken!

eragon · 12/09/2012 16:02

it does sound very american to me......(from what i have read on other food related chat boards...)

From a personal point of view I would be horrified and would let the school know.

of course from a allergy point of view, and unless the school excludes allergic kids, there will be kids with allergies who will not be able to take part in all this take away crap.

this could , of course be a bonus, but no kid wants to be left out.

theinets · 12/09/2012 16:09

I agree eating out of a bucket with my fingers is the last thing I'd ever do. Some people's standards and class are non existent.

Hotcoffeeisamemory · 12/09/2012 16:13

You're in the UAE aren't you!

It's vile.

A small sweet to be handed out at home time is fine, but not fast food. Especially KFC as that's vile. McDonald's is ok though! Wink

zeeboo · 12/09/2012 16:15

My kids would love that!! And so would I!! But then I'm not obsessive avo

zeeboo · 12/09/2012 16:15

Obsessive about what they or I eat!

Fakebook · 12/09/2012 16:21

Erm no, been around quite a long time, am a serial name changer. I find it incredibly shitty to claim that people are classless if they eat a fucking KFC though. Let's all bow down to the perfection that is YOU inets. Hmm.

SchrodingersMew · 12/09/2012 16:34

"I agree eating out of a bucket with my fingers is the last thing I'd ever do. Some people's standards and class are non existent."

Wow, just wow. Some could argue that sitting on your arse on a computer arguing with strangers on the internet about people having no class, is classless. Wink

SimoneD · 12/09/2012 17:12

Its difficult because you expect your child to be eating healthily whilst in the care of a nursery. Having said that I'd much rather dd was given fried chicken than the other treats you mention i.e. Cakes and bags of sweets. I'd be more pissed off at that than the chicken. The odd bit of fried chicken is much healthier than eating a load of refined sugar, trans fats and flour!

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 12/09/2012 17:29

Er.... Did I say I was too good for KFC?

No.

And the trough comment was tounge in cheek.

Touchy!!

Hmm
MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 12/09/2012 17:30

And no silver platters in this house but I would put kebab meat and chips on a plate and eat it with a knife and fork.

Easier to dip in ketchup that way. Wink

squeakytoy · 12/09/2012 17:33

Well after reading this thread, I might just go and get us all KFC for dinner.. havent had it in ages Grin.

Nothing at all wrong with KFC so long as it isnt every night of the week..

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/09/2012 17:33

Mmmmmmm KFC.

theodorakis · 12/09/2012 18:02

Yeah I have lived in Asia as well. So what? I have lived in Africa and the US as well, again, so what? If you want UK standards live there. Why don't you?

Fakebook · 12/09/2012 18:03

That's interesting. Do you know that you can retrieve a piece of chicken from the aforementioned bucket and put it on a plate and eat it with a knife and fork too?

GreenD · 12/09/2012 18:05

Civilized people eat using cutlery, from plates, at a table.

DilysPrice · 12/09/2012 18:09

What do you think it might be if it's not chicken BWK? Octopus? Squirrel?
It's not high welfare free range organic chicken, and it's not a health food but it is simply pieces of chicken dipped in coating and shoved in a deep fat fryer.

skiesmylimit · 12/09/2012 18:11

Fair enough, KFC in nursery is wrong. Especially when packed lunches have been provided.

But I see NO harm in eating it at home, yes its deep fried and not exactly good for you. But so what? do we have to avoid everything that's not good for you? That must be a pretty boring life.there is many more worse things you can do in life, KFC every now and again won't hurt.

dreams about last nights KFC

skiesmylimit · 12/09/2012 18:15

Civilized people eat using cutlery, from plates, at a table

That may be the case, but again eating a kfc with fingers wouldn't hurt. If the rest of the time you eat with cutlery and plates at a table then what is the harm in once in a while just letting your hair down and stop stressing about being 'civilised'. I really think some people need to lighten up a bit. What are you trying to prove?

Not trying to argue, just my opinion. I love eating a KFC with my fingers, only if I give them a good wash first.

katkouta · 12/09/2012 18:19

theodorakis I can assure you it is not normal in the Middle East to eat like that. Having worked there in a nursery myself, it was traditional food all the way.
I am assuming you are in gulf country as I certainly didn't have the triple salary and free housing you speak of.
May I suggest you take that big French fry off your shoulder and stop generalising.

katkouta · 12/09/2012 18:22

And GreenD WTAF? so when I was living in the Middle East with my family and we would eat all together,on the floor, talking and laughing together, we were just uncivilised bastards ??

katkouta · 12/09/2012 18:22

we ate with our fingers !!!!! Aaaaaarghhhhh

Fakebook · 12/09/2012 18:24

GreenD has just insulted most of the Eastern world with that shitty ignorant comment.

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 12/09/2012 18:29

I eat salad with my fingers...!

LynetteScavo · 12/09/2012 18:32

I am sitting here open mouthed. Like this -> Shock

I don't know if having KFC delivered to nursery schools is genius or ridiculous. Grin. Any school I know of would turn the delivery person away at the door.

But I think I might try ordering a Dominos delivery to arive in the middle of numeracy when DS2 turns 10, just to see what happens. Grin (I am imagining the office staff having a merry little feast.)
