to have shouted at the postie this morning!

I have three autistic children and a disabled dh who can sleep odd hours. Everytime this particular postman delivers it sounds like a police raid. His collegue can knock once, reasonably quietly, but as he informed me this morning, he's not his collegue. Confused
Why the fuck does he do it when I have asked, regularly that he knocks in the same way the other posties do.
Grrrr!

Wow, he must have some powerful knuckles on him!

What exactly is it that he does that is so bad? Is he extra loud?

Dawndonna · 12/09/2012 09:29

He really does sound like he's breaking in. Half a dozen knocks, really loud with no breaks between. It's ridiculous. 17 year old, getting ready for school ended up under his bed he was so scared. I have asked this chap before, and explained why.

Get a quiet doorbell?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 12/09/2012 09:33

Maybe he forgets and it would help to put a 'please knock quietly' sign on your door.

I'm impressed that you get post this early! Ours doesn't come until 2-3pm, and we rarely get knocks. Unless dh has been ordering too much stuff on eBay.

mumblechum1 · 12/09/2012 09:34

I'd get a doorbell.

Claire2009 · 12/09/2012 09:35

Get a doorbell/sign that says "knock quietly" ... Postie was just doing his job and you can't expect him to remember everyone.

Dawndonna · 12/09/2012 09:44

Got a door bell. Can expect him to remember. It's a village and his two collegues remember. There is also a sign on the door.
Still furious.

Perhaps he is fed up of people complaining "you didn't knock loud enough" when he doesn't deliver their parcels? At most houses one quiet knock isn't going to get a response.

TudorJess · 12/09/2012 09:50

Get a door knocker and put felt on the back so it's not too loud?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 09:52

Sign saying leave parcels on the step? Presumably if you track parcels you're unlikely to lose anything as you will be watching out for them.

Dawndonna · 12/09/2012 09:53

Good ideas, Tudor and LRD. Will do both. Things don't go usually go missing here.

Sounds like a common problem.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 09:55

Hope it works out. Smile

PoppadomPreach · 12/09/2012 09:59

Could you keep am eye out for him, then just as he's about to open the door, you open it and shout "BOO!" at him as loud as you can.

Won't solve the problem, but it would scare the bejesus out of him hopefully.

megandraper · 12/09/2012 10:01

LMAO at Poppadom!

Could you try putting an external post box up (one big enough for parcels)?

Saying that, one of the postmen who deliver to us refuses to use the post box on the gate and insists on coming up the drive to use the one on the front door. Thus setting the dog off and upsetting DS. He also always forgets to close the gate behind him...

TudorJess · 12/09/2012 10:37

Or you could get a padded door :o

fluffacloud · 12/09/2012 10:55

Call or write to the Delivery Office Manager and explain the distress that this causes your DCs. I would also complain about this particular postmans attitude!

There are things that can be done - a note can be put on the mail frame for your address, you could arrange for your parcels to go to a neighbour etc.

Don't forget to mention that the other posties are very considerate of your requests.

If all else fails keep complaining, to the Chairman if you don't get anywhere.

Good luck!

mayorquimby · 12/09/2012 10:58

Put up a sign saying "please do not knock" and arrange to collect your post from the office.
I don't think he's doing anything wrong but that doesn't mean it's not causing you problems.

ineedabodytransplant · 12/09/2012 15:35

Dawndonna,

I don't have anything like the problems you must have to cope with when your children have problems...

I don't have any problems with our regular/normal postie. But if we have a parcel delivery from Royal Mail...jeez

I almost think he takes a run-up at our door knocker. This can be anytime between 0700 and 1000, and I am always surprised to find my front door still upright. I almost expect it to be lying along the hall a la terminator. I am sure he must wake up people in the next town

Ignore people who say get a door bell or leave a note. Put some foam behind the knocker. It will drive the bar steward insane when he tries to make any noise at all.

Crinkle77 · 12/09/2012 15:41

How many parcels do you get delivered?

Bellyjaby · 12/09/2012 16:35

We used to have one of these. I'm a really jumpy person (which is nothing like your DCs problems I know) and I'd fly through the roof everytime. One day I lost my rag and screamed "There is a doorbell you know, maybe we'll install a sign with a large arrow for you as you obviously have problems looking further than 5 inches". He never knocked again. I think I was rude, but I don't feel sorry.

catwoo · 12/09/2012 16:36

get a doorbell.
