Taking ds out of school for a couple of weeks for a family wedding abroad. He's in p2. Our school or authority are ok with this and don't make a big fuss about it thankfully.

I just need to write a letter to the head but don't know what to say?!

Should I big up the educational value of the trip and the learning opportunities or just say hi Bob won't be in for 2 weeks bye.

Two weeks is a long time.

I've written letters for a day or two's absence. One was Disneyland Paris - I said it would be a cultural experience going to France's captial city in a big fat liar stylee. The other was greatgrandma's 100 birthday so needed no explanation.

I guess you could say you could home school him - have quick meeting with teacher and make sure he does relevant work and then show school afterwards?

No guarantees they will grant it though.

Whatever you write make it succint and offer a solution as above.

They don't approve it, it goes down as unauthorised but as long as they know so we don't have my colleagues social workers at the door!

Hi blah,

Bob will be away from school from x to x. We will be attending a family wedding in blah, which is obviously a very special occasion and a wonderful opportunity for Bob to connect with extended family. We don't expect teachers to go to additional effort to provide work but if you could let us know what topics Bob's class are looking at during the absence period we will try to initiate sone discussions or projects on those themes. Thanks for your kind co-operation on this exceptional occasion,

Mrs Bobbette

Bingo! The wedding is also in an old castle, topic for this term is knights and castles! Yay!

It will be unauthorised. As teachers in Scotland we are also told we do not have to set and mark work for pupils away on holiday, only for those who are away for reasons of ill health etc. If you ask for additional work from the teacher it will be up to him/her whether or not to give it to you and whether or not to offer support.

this isn't an aibu, is it?

Just tell them he won't be in. None of their business beyond that.

MrsKeithRichards · 11/09/2012 15:57

Yeah teacher didn't seem to fussed when I told her about work. He'll have books over there, maths will be covered in conversion rate discussions, sorted!
