Have inadvertently sold a fake item and now buyer is threatening me with police

Have namechanged as I am so embarassed. And also sorry to post in here, maybe should have posted in legal, but I know there is a lot of traffic here.

I was given a Mulberry bag as a christmas present a couple of years ago and tbh I never liked it much anyway and never used it (apologies to any handbag fans). As far as I knew it was genuine and had all tags with it etc.

I had no idea what it was worth but recently did a bit of research and they are about £700 new I think. So I decided to get rid and put it on gumtree. I was inundated with enquiries and sold it to a lady last week. She was really happy with it and I got £350 for it.

She has texted me today claiming it is fake and saying she wants me to pay her back and she will return the bag if I give her my address. She doesn't know where I live as I met her in town(at her request!) but she has my name, and obviously my number.

I am very upset and shocked as I would never have sold it if I thought it was not real, I would have maybe just given it away or something. Its completely against my principles, I am an honest person :( I am sat here crying now as I am so scared.

I really needed the money, I don't want the bag back and I don't want to return the money as as far as I am concerned I sold it in good faith and she happily chose to buy it. I am not a criminal, or a scam artist, but she is threatening to report me to the police. :(

can anyone help?

Hopefully that clears it up 😂

Breakupcharlie · 07/10/2020 11:19

I should have known this was a zombie thread as on the first page PP said hi to another poster. I thought to myself ‘nobody seems to do that anymore I wonder if it’s because everyone NC or because they’re trying to be hard old school MNers’.

silverbubbles · 07/10/2020 11:23

My thoughts are that you would have known if this was a fake or not.
Surely you would have originally had receipts or at least packaging from where it was bought.

Was a £700 gift normal from your ex or was he more of a 'I like labels, but can't afford them type'?

I am afraid that if you are selling a fake handbag for £350 then you are a con artist. Stop playing dumb - You need to give the woman her money back.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 07/10/2020 11:26

Maybe she's read this thread?

SoupDragon · 07/10/2020 11:26

@JukeBoxHero

Hopefully that clears it up 😂
Apparently not. 🤦🏻‍♀️
BlackSwan · 07/10/2020 11:33

I have an irritating friend who routinely has buyer's remorse and then claims that items she has purchased are fake.
Alternatively, she welches on purchases and claims she has just lost her job... it's horrendous. She's a nightmare. I think there are a lot of scammers out there.

HibiscusNell · 07/10/2020 11:36

Anyone for a “vintage” fake Mulbery bag. 😅

JukeBoxHero · 07/10/2020 11:38

@SoupDragon no helping some is there?
😂

Howlooseisyourgoose · 07/10/2020 11:38

Zombie but what a dilemma. If I was OP I would have been torn between doing the right thing in case bag was fake and also worried that the woman was going to scam me by giving me a different bag. Glad it all worked out, kind of.

Beautiful3 · 07/10/2020 11:44

The woman is going to keep the bag now???!! So she must have had it authenticated so knows now, its genuine! Glad it's all been resolved now. Thanks for the update.

QuimReaper · 07/10/2020 11:47

How do threads like this get resurrected?! I just read about half the sodding thing, full of warm admiration at the way in which a disgruntled spat between posters was graciously diffused with some gentle bum humour.

Ah, the good old days.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/10/2020 11:48

@sixlostmonkeys

How do you know it's fake? How do you know she will return the correct bag?

Take time to calm and collect yourself. Maybe then contact her and tell her you will get someone to collect the bag from her and once they have checked the serial number/hidden id code to make sure it's the one you sold, she will get her money back.

She may be genuine, she may be trying it on........

This was the first thing I thought of.

I think she's scamming you. You have no guarantee that the bag she gives you back will be the one you sold her. She could easily have got hold of a cheap knock off herself, and return that to you while keeping the genuine bag.

This is a horrible situation for you. I hope it gets sorted. If you have kept a record of the soil number etc, you may be able to confirm - if not, it may actually be up to her to prove that the bag you sold was fake. And that if this this is a fake bag, that it was the one you sold her and nota replacement.

Do you have photos etc of your bag that you put online. I would think that you can compare it to the bags on the Mulberry site - I think most of these manufacturers have advice on how to spot knock-offs, because they want to maintain their brand integrity.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/10/2020 11:49

Oh - bullox - it's a zombie.

Thanks Jukebox

YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP A BIT!!!
2bazookas · 07/10/2020 12:02

Meet her in town as before, and exchange bag and cash.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 07/10/2020 12:04

@2bazookas is deffo on a wind-up

JukeBoxHero · 07/10/2020 12:05

YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP A BIT!!!

PARDON? Didn't quite catch that 😂

theemmadilemma · 07/10/2020 12:06

Having all the shit with the bag means nothing other than it was a higher quality fake.

My ex husband was flash, and had the money to be. Unfortunately after we divorced I discovered 2 of the 3 LV bags I loved and were given to me and I believed to be genuine were in fact high quality fakes.

theemmadilemma · 07/10/2020 12:06

Oh fuck. That'll learn me.

RefriedBeanz · 07/10/2020 12:17

Does anyone else feel like posting comments just so Juke will keep shouting? 😂🤣

I love a good shout. It's therapeutic 😂

Don't get to do it often now the kids are adults.
