AIBU to feel bleugh and not really know how to pull myself back up

I'm in my late thirties. Overweight (the heaviest I've ever been) and feel depressed about the way I look and knackered all the time. The house needs a massive decluttering as does my wardrobe but I just feel like I don't have the energy. I don't have masses Of time to myself but I know I need to get myself in gear. Feel like my life is just floating by.

AIBU to ask how you've motivated yourselves to get out of a slump?

I could have written your post too but early 30s. Could do with a kick up the ass too Sad

Fifteen minutes at a time.

Set a timer and do one thing for 15 minutes, be it exercise, de cluttering, planning healthy meals or just doing the dishes.

Try it.

Try not to look at the big picture.

Just start by sorting one room or if that's too much a bit of a room.

Maybe start in the kitchen. Empty bins, wash up, clear sides?

You don't need a kick in the ass Smile

You need to be encouraged to take something UP - not give something up.

So - 'Take up' making one corner of your home nice for you - buy nice bath smellies and take a bath, buy nice bed linen and make up your bed, take one tiny corner (like your bedside cabinet or your make-up drawer, or your smellies cupboard) and clean it.

'Take up' an exercise you like - don't join something you hate - so, walking with a friend, zumba - whatever floats your particular boat.

PEOPLE ARE HAPPY WHO DO THINGS THAT MAKE THEM HAPPY - my life is content when I am busy and enjoyably occupied not when I've decided on some nutty diet or joining a gym.

So, 'take up' an evening class - a pottery class will function just as well on one level as Weight Watchers - it takes you away from the fridge at night Grin, it makes you feel happier and more inclined to self-nurture.

You need to find what makes your boat float - one of the things I'm really enjoying (it may not be your sort of thing) is couch to 5k - there's loads of threads on that - I've been practically euphorically happy since starting it.

Kicks in asses rarely work - frankly, it just joins the already self-critical voice telling you that you're too fat/you're house is a mess etc etc

Look in Good Housekeeping at the FlyLady threads.

Very small steps, each day. And when you've cleared a space, try and keep it that way.

Good luck.

BlackTieNTails · 10/09/2012 18:12

my advice would be stay off the internet, it sucks motivation and time away

OhDearNigel · 10/09/2012 18:18

Get your mum to take away the TV and laptop for a week.seriously. They waste your life for you. I guarantee you will be so bored you'll have done everything after a week

holyfishnets · 10/09/2012 18:28

Can you get yourself hooked on zumba 3 times a week? There are some good Zumba DVD's out there. Really good fun and up beat.

Unfuck Your Habitat is my go-to site for stuff like that - I am the least domestic person ever and get anxiety attacks at the thought of tackling any of the major decluttering and sorting tasks this house needs, but UfYH is designed to get around those issues. It has inspired me to pretty much deep clean my kitchen in the space of three days worth of five or ten minute slots while waiting for tea to brew or toast to pop.
