Left in toilet

it was my DD first half day at nursery today. She is 3 and has been dry (bar the accident for ages). Came to pick her up at 11.30 to find her alone sitting on the toilet with wet pants, socks and a puddle on the floor. The teacher no where in sight and not at all apologetic when confronted. Now I know she has to learn to use the toilet by herself (which she can do at home with a stool) but on her first day I expected her to have some help settling in. There are three teachers/assistants and only 12 children (6 of whom started last week to stagger things) so hardly rushed off their feet. Apparently she had gone to the toilet with other girls earlier in the day but again no supervision. AIBU for a bit of care and attention on her first day? What is the norm at nursery for this age group?

This is from a nursery that got grumpy when we refused to tick the consent box allowing them to take the her off premises in mini bus or teachers car without further consent from us. Is this normal?

find another nursery where they give a damn.

Sparklingbrook · 10/09/2012 17:43

Time to start looking for a new nursery. I think that is appalling. Your poor DD. Sad

Blackberryinoperative · 10/09/2012 17:43

Sadly it is normal. I would voice my discontent though. Poor thing she tried hard to get it right, bless her.

Buy her some chocolate buttons from auntie blackberry x

WinklyFriedChicken · 10/09/2012 17:44

Definitely a new nursery. Poor wee pet :(

WowOoo · 10/09/2012 17:44

I have told the nursery staff that ds still needs a lot of help with the toilet and so could they help him.
He's come home in the same clothes so I assume he had help!

Perhaps they just assumed she could do it all by herself.

Have a word and say she's still a bit unsure and needs assistance.

We have to give permission about planned trips about a week in advance on top of a general consent form.

Not sure what the norm is, sorry.

Blackberryinoperative · 10/09/2012 17:46

When I was viewing nurseries I walked out of one where a little girl was handed the potty and left to it. She was only 18 months :(

I asked why a child so young was being potty trained (when blatantly not ready) and was told the parents had insisted on it. She was soaked and struggling to even balance herself on it.

Needless to say we didn't use them!

phantomnamechanger · 10/09/2012 17:47

I would very much doubt their cars were insured for that sort of use!! and I would want to know exactly where my child was at all times. And yes, some help in toileting till she gets settled in would be a good idea- its not rocket science, they just sound like they cant be bothered TBH

OhTheConfusion · 10/09/2012 17:49

How long had she been at the toilet for before you arrived?

Is this a state nursery? If so go through the due process... ask for a quick word with the head tomorrow and explain your concerns. If her response is not satisfactory contact county.

MrNorfolk · 10/09/2012 17:50

Thanks - she is her usual cheery self as we don't wrap her in cotton wool but I was feeling a bit angry

When I was at school consent forms were the norm and that was before laws on car seats!

nope, new nursery for sure they sound vile.

CleoSmackYa · 10/09/2012 17:52

Find a new nursery I think! That sounds very upsetting xxxx

MrNorfolk · 10/09/2012 17:54

not a state nursery - she is only doing 3 half days so she has a bit of a change from home.

I am going to have a word but from the feelings I am getting they don't seem very on the ball

some kids can....... I was Confused when it worked.......... bloody know all grannies

OhTheConfusion · 10/09/2012 18:00

Sorry but if it's a private nursery then look for a new one asap! Send in writing your reasons for leaving and get her out, they sound terrible.

If they argue about notice etc involve OFSTEAD.

McHappyPants2012 · 10/09/2012 18:04

i don't think 3 year olds should be left unsupervised in the toilet, i am not sure if there are any 3 year year old that can wash thire hand properly after using the toilet.

Nanny0gg · 10/09/2012 18:07

If it's not a pre-school, but a private nursery, write and tell them why and move her.
