To think pinatas at children's parties are just an invitation to violence?

Went to a party yesterday. They had a pinata swinging from a tree. The boys queued up to bash the thing with a big stick. It was a full on display of testosterone and agression (not just from the children tbh) and I was a bit shocked by it. The birthday boy and most of his friends were 4. Some of the younger children were really upset by it - couldn't understand why they were beating the living daylights out of the pretty horse in the tree.

And then the mother complains that starting nursery has made her DS badly behaved and fighty Hmm

AIBU?

you should see some the girls, no different to the boys. its not violence or agression its just a bit of fun and competition.

NineCrimes · 09/09/2012 20:43

Yabu and need to get serious grip.

NineCrimes · 09/09/2012 20:45

I am pretty sure not many kids go and bash a live donkey afterward and wait for sweets to come out of its arse.

crashdollGOLD · 09/09/2012 20:49

Oh dear god. YABvU.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 09/09/2012 20:53

Bahahahaaa

I love pinatas.

nuckingfackered · 09/09/2012 20:58

Ninecrimes - Me and DD are laughing so much at the thought of that!

FFS OP get a grip. YABVU

NowThenWreck · 09/09/2012 20:58

YABU, unless they are shouting "kill it! Kill it!"

numbum · 09/09/2012 20:59

LOL LOL ninecrimes Can you imagine? Grin

nuckingfackered · 09/09/2012 21:00

We had a pinata at a team building day at work a few months ago - we all took it in turns to bash it blindfolded - it was bloody great Grin

Littleplasticpeople · 09/09/2012 21:02

Yabu. Our piñata was refusing to break when under attack from the 5 year olds, so up stepped the grandmas. Now that was some scary aggression!

SayersIsBetterThanGreggs · 09/09/2012 21:02

Ave heard it all now.

PuffPants · 09/09/2012 21:03

Perhaps Health & Safety should ban musical chairs. After all, there's usually a fight pushing and shoving for the last chair and one usually finishes up unlucky and falling on the floor.

MerryCosIWonaGold · 09/09/2012 21:05

Phew! We had a pinata at ds's 4th and his 6th birthdays. Was beginning to wonder if all the parents were thinking Hmm. It was the most popular bit of the party - both times!! And yes, you do need to ration the sweets out, and they go in the party bags anyway...

McHappyPants2012 · 09/09/2012 21:08

After reading MN and party dislikes I am
Left debating to invite ds school friends to a party for his 7th birthday

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 09/09/2012 21:09

McHappyPants you should do a cage fighting party with Fruit Shoots and a trip to Greggs.

TheMonster · 09/09/2012 21:09

Yanbu. I hate the things.

MerryCosIWonaGold · 09/09/2012 21:09

McHappy. If your ds and the other kids have a good time, who cares? By 7 the parents won't be staying around anyway...

pigletmania · 09/09/2012 21:10

Yabvu get a grip, it's a paper thingy not a real live animal

CaliforniaLeaving · 09/09/2012 21:10

We always stay well away from the piñata too, nothing worse than a blindfolded kid with a bat Shock

AvonCallingBarksdale · 09/09/2012 21:11

Stop telling me to get a grip you bunch of donkey-bashing loons

Ha, ha, OP, you've probably got another 4 pages or so to go before we let you off!! Smile

ekidna · 09/09/2012 21:12

Chubfuddler · 09/09/2012 21:13

I'm so going to commandeer donkeybashingloon for name change purposes.

ErikNorseman · 09/09/2012 21:13

YANBU
friend's DS had to go to A&E after being bashed in the face by his sister when she was trying to smash a pinata. Silly game if you ask me.

5madthings · 09/09/2012 21:14

lol well done for realising you are unreasonable!

my kids love pinatas! and you can get 'pull' ones for little children :)

my embarrasing pinata tale... ds1 and ds2 were invited to a party i think the birthday boy was 4? anyway the kids werent having much luck with smashing it so all the parents took it in turns to do so, it got very competitive, i had my go and when i went to hit the pinata i swung the stick back to get a good wack... and hit the birthday boy on the head as i hadnt realised he had come up behind me! Blush MORTIFIED!! i was soo embarrased and couldnt apologise enough!! oh it was terrible, thankfully his parents were very understanding but oh how i wanted the ground to swallow me up!
