To think I should not have to pay for my own CRB? Or interview travel?

um that's it really
I've applied for 2 jobs 1 wants me to pay for a compulsory CRB, the other is offering no travel expenses for the interview (second class train fare not first class flight unfortunately Wink

These are both high responsibility, (but unfortunately not high paid) they are both temp posts but will undoubtedly involve many hours of unpaid overtime.

I've just never had to pay for these myself before so am a nit shocked but then wondered if it was normal!

Never been offered or offered travel expenses for an interview.

lisad123 · 07/09/2012 16:52

Travel too interview I think you should pay. However, never ever paid for my CRB!

WorraLiberty · 07/09/2012 16:53

The CRB will often be paid for by the company but travel? I've never heard of that being paid for....why should they?

Lora1982 · 07/09/2012 16:53

i was offered a job if i paid for my own crb... i refused it and went for one who paid for it themselves.

ive heard of ppl asking for travel expenses back but ive never done it myself.

RedBlanket · 07/09/2012 16:54

I've never been offered travel expenses and wouldn't expect it.

TittyWhistles · 07/09/2012 16:55

Interview travel yes, of course!

Some do ask you to stump up for CRB. Usually the same ones who ask you to pay back cost of training if you leave within the year.

KenLeeeeeee · 07/09/2012 16:58

I didn't have to pay for my CRB but never heard of any company paying travel costs to get to an interview!

Leena49 · 07/09/2012 17:01

Even 16 to 18 year olds aren't supposed to pay for CRBs for college courses now. We were charging before. I've never been charged by an employer before and had lots done.

Socknickingpixie · 07/09/2012 17:05

ive allways had both paid for when ever ive interviewed and if i interview anybody then it gets paid for them. but i wouldnt obtain a crb unless i had offered the job subject to passing it.

NellyJob · 07/09/2012 17:06

a teaching agency tried to make me pay for CRB but paid for themselves in the end after I moaned enough.
Travel expenses have never heard of any company coughing up for this.

DizzyKipper · 07/09/2012 17:06

I've always been reimbursed for my CRB once I've worked for x amount of time. I've never been paid travel expenses to get to an interview, although DH was reimbursed his when getting to the interview was genuinely out of his way. I guess I'd say YABU if the train fare isn't that much and the journey wasn't too long/difficult.

FelicitywasSarca · 07/09/2012 17:09

CRBs are less than £40 I would question the solvency of a company which won't cover this.

I agree also, interview expenses are usually met. (although I wouldn't turn down a job where they weren't iyswim)

Socknickingpixie · 07/09/2012 17:11

the home office sia application process charges people for there own crb checks as part of the admin fee total cost about £230. in some industrys its normal and not a reflection on the solvency

BonzoDooDah · 07/09/2012 17:13

For "professional" job interviews I have always been paid for travel (as opposed to casual work or less skilled jobs I have done). I'd not expect to pay for a CRB check. You KNOW you are clear - it is them that need the information. Are they going to ask for the stamps to put on letters to your referees? Hmm

RuleBritannia · 07/09/2012 17:13

I worked at a school and prospective teachers travelling a long distance cold offer a receipt and were reimbursed.

RuleBritannia · 07/09/2012 17:14

To an interview

Southwest · 07/09/2012 17:14

Ok sorry just to clear a few things up CRB would only be done if I got the job I've had loads and never had to pay before which was why I was so surprised.

Interview expenses are more interesting it has always been offered in the past for every job I've applied for, although it's never been paid, usually for me it is little more then a tube fare so I never claimed it, I think I claimed it once when it was a maybe 20 pound train fare but they never paid up. This time the interview is early so it will be an expensive train fare and I'm slightly pissed off with this employer (long unconnected story) so I thought well why not.......

Hmm hadn't realised it want usual

Oh and job is public sector FWIW

I wouldn't expect travel expenses either. It sounds a bit entitled to me.

Southwest · 07/09/2012 17:16

Felicity you comment made me LOL

Whispers (It's the NHS)

But don't tell anyone

OP posts:
Southwest · 07/09/2012 17:19

Bun I suppose it is not usual because most people apply for work where they live but my employer has a habit of sending people here there and everywhere so is more used to paying travel

I don't feel entitled IYSWIM I'm just thinking through why it has been offered in every case in the past but not now, as I said I've effectively never claimed/been paid any before

OP posts:
Socknickingpixie · 07/09/2012 17:23

bunbaker in certain type of jobs its seriously normal to get them not entitled(in the negative way) at all

valiumredhead · 07/09/2012 17:24

I have only been given travel expenses once, but I think CRB check should be done by the company.

Southwest · 07/09/2012 17:27

Thanks all BTW

EllenParsons · 07/09/2012 17:37

I have always been paid at least a contribution towards travel expenses for job interviews (at law firms) but I wouldn't automatically expect it for all job interviews in any industry. Never had a CRB check so not sure about that!

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 17:37

Why should you expect travel expenses Confused

CRB it's up to the employer really. I would expect them to pay it but wouldn't grumble if I had to. Especially if I got a job out of it. Lots of areas of the NHS don't pay for them.
