:( I'm not really able to help, but so sorry for your friend and her family.

BlackberryIce · 07/09/2012 08:03

It's sad but sortable.

But what is this 'fundraising' she is out doing daily? This would affect benefits

Margerykemp · 07/09/2012 08:06

Have they been in touch with CAB and Shelter?

Jinsei · 07/09/2012 08:09

I assumed the fundraising was for treatment for her DH, blackberry. could be wrong, though.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/09/2012 08:11

They need something that just isn't available unless someone builds them a house - the only bungalows built in that area are those little one bedroom elderly ones - they need a 3/4 bed bungalow with adaptions.

Any chance they could privately rent a bungalow?

Jinsei · 07/09/2012 08:12

She said something about having to fight for funds for the right rehabilitation and re-education, anyway.

Bossybritches22 · 07/09/2012 08:16

So sad....Sad

beepbeep · 07/09/2012 08:16

The fundraising was initially to bring Alex back from France to the UK (had to fund private ambulance) and now it's for his rehabilitation.

Have you seen Alex surf? (great clip done by one of his friends)

Not disagreeing, just curious,BlackBerry...how does fundraising affect benefits?

So sorry for your friend, op. From what she's posted, it seems she knows about (and has been refused) the usual benefits...carers allowance, dla ( or new adult alternative), etc.
For what it's worth I'd be doing all I can ti get dh to that job interview. The more employers are faced with the realities if this, the better. They will get sick and tired of being faced with people who are evidently unsuitable for the work and complain about their time being wasted. If the disabled person argues against it, and doesn't show up, they are seen as refusing work.
Your friend has all my sympathies.

baabaapinksheep · 07/09/2012 08:19

Why is she fundraising? Surely her dh's treatment will be on the nhs?

baabaapinksheep · 07/09/2012 08:20

Sorry x post

beepbeep · 07/09/2012 08:23

Unfortunately the NHS doesn't seem to be able to provide the full rehab he requires, there are a lot of costs involved and this is what the fundraising is for - the provide him with the best chance they can get for him.

OP posts:
beepbeep · 07/09/2012 08:23

so did I! - x-post!

If you are able to share the links on facebook or other social networks we'd appreciate it, not sure if this would help but it may get her some support from somewhere?

Claireabella1 · 07/09/2012 09:59

The Red Cross might be able to help, some churches provide food packages as well. I've shared the video on Facebook and about to donate at gofundme.com/making-waves-for-alex and you can buy tee shirts at pistache.co.uk I hope this helps a little and I really hope things get better for your friend very soon.

beepbeep · 07/09/2012 11:46

Thank you Clairebella

I have just been reading her blog about what happened, terribly sad. I don't know how to help other than to share the link but I hope someone can help this family out, Her children are adorable.

ike1 · 07/09/2012 13:08

Where is the Occupational Therapist and Social Worker involved in this case? Headway is the charity that will be interested in her case.

TroublesomeEx · 07/09/2012 13:19

Why is he on ESA if he is incapable of working?
Is he in receipt of DLA?
Does she get CA or are they not currently living together (sorry if I missed that)?

I don't understand why a family in their position, and with a child under 5, isn't in receipt of the basic benefits to which they're entitled.

Surely he'd qualify for the highest care and mobility rate of DLA?

ike1 · 07/09/2012 13:22

This is a Social Workers role. Even an Occupational Therapist who would be involved in the reeducative rehab process should be able to advise on the pathway to benefits.

Hopeforever · 07/09/2012 13:26

You are on ESA if you can't work, the new version of incapacity benefit. Dreadful that they call it Employment Support as it basically long term sick pay.

Thousands of people are being denied it even though they can't work :(

TroublesomeEx · 07/09/2012 13:28

Oh right, thanks for clarifying, Hope. Well that's a misleading name then isn't it?! Hmm

So what employment would they like this lady's husband to be supported into then? Stupid govt.
