It's driving me crazy this week...
It's my dds birthday next week . My SIL has rung 4 times to ask what to get her for her birthday. We said Julia Donaldson books (because they are easy to find) so she calls back 'I couldn't find any' then we say anything from brave film. So she calls back. 'Argos didn't have anything! I feel like saying. Forget it please!
Colleague at work also driving me mad. What jobs should I do? I tell her then she says she doesn't know whe things usually go so she can't do that job.

I don't understand how women in their late 50s can be so lacking in the ability to think for themselves!

Bluegingham · 07/09/2012 11:59

I think some people try to abdicate responsibility at every opportunity. I try to stay calm and ask "what do you think is the best thing to do?" in the hope they can find the answer within themselves.
Failing that, a good scream and a slap. Some people only understand violence.

Laquitar · 07/09/2012 12:01

I thought you meant women who eat jelly babies, who enjoy the rain, play snowfight etc and i was going to have a go at you.

YANBU. I think it is their mum's fault Grin. Non-practical people always drive me mad, my sil is one too.

RobotLover68 · 07/09/2012 12:05

From your title I thought you meant women who pretend to be helpless in order to get people to do stuff for them

my sister does this, she also talks in a silly girly voice and puts her head on one side. SHE'S NEARLY 50!!!

phew! that feels better! thanks OP

ilovetermtime · 07/09/2012 12:05

What's wrong with eating jelly babies????

Laquitar · 07/09/2012 12:08

Nothing at all ilove. I'm eating some atm and the title made me feel defensive (i'm 50 btw)

WillNeverGetALicence · 07/09/2012 12:24

My SIL is a bit like this.

She is 36 yrs old. But she puts on a cute little girl act.

My brother enjoys it, it makes him feel big and strong.

They have quite a traditional relationship - he goes to work, she is SAHM. He does the manly DIY and car maintenance, she does all the housework.

It works for them.

And I do like her and get along with her just fine.

But the cutesy little girl behaviour gets up my nose sometimes.

However what is interesting is that she also displays the other side of a '1950s housewife' when she is displeased.

She then gets cross in a passive aggressive way [commences noisy dishwashing and vacuuming for example] and repeatedly makes her point hoping to get her way [or nags really].

And DB doesn't enjoy this nearly so much, no sirree Grin

She usually gets what she wants though, so good for her.

Just not my way of doing things. I would prefer to talk to DH and be spoken to as an equal. And if I want something done I do it myself [or suggest to DH that it would be a good idea, never nag, oh no Grin].

That said I am not always successful so maybe there is something in the surrendered wife approach...!

gigglygirly · 07/09/2012 12:38

Love Zooey DEschanel! In New Girl she has such a cute character. Love her clothes too.

MrsMangelfanciedPaulRobinson · 07/09/2012 14:42

I too find people like that infuriating.

I know a woman in her mid thirties who is just like a child. She has a child herself but relies on her parents to do the majority of the parenting on her behalf, and she is more like a sister to her child than a mother. She talks in a baby voice and is just so incapable. We were once talking about packed lunches for our DCs and she said that she never makes her DC a packed lunch for school. Instead her mother makes it every day and drops it round to their house at 7.30am.

She also talks to her child in a funny language using baby words. Her DD is 10 but is quite immature and incapable too as obviously she has no example to follow

Shakey1500 · 07/09/2012 14:47

Childlike voices annoy the hell out of me. I blame Melanie Griffith in working girl.

MrsMangelfanciedPaulRobinson · 07/09/2012 14:48

The one I know speaks just like her, Shakey! I don't know if it's her natural voice or if she puts it on in order to be more cutesy and girliefied, but damn it's annoying

MarysBeard · 07/09/2012 14:58

There were loads in early 80s though. Sandra Dickinson & Bonnie Langford.

Sinkingfeeling · 07/09/2012 14:59

Childlike or just too much time on their hands?

Leena49 · 07/09/2012 15:10

Yes you are right they are not childlike cos that's insulting to children. They are just lazy and needy.
My SIL who couldnt apparently find a Julia Donaldson book she has so far spoken to my dh, my dd and myself and now I'm just getting hacked off. I wish she would just forget the birthday present.
She also talks in a stupid voice and still buys chocolate flavour lip gloss even though she is 58. It's all part of the same issue - learned helplessness.

OP posts:
MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 07/09/2012 15:52

Do this for her.

Trills · 07/09/2012 16:06

She can buy whatever lipgloss she likes

GusTheOneEyedPolarBear · 07/09/2012 16:14

My DH can be like this, I quite often feel it's through laziness rather than helplessness.
He got the grumps with me because I made him pack ds1's suitcase when they went camping claiming he didn't know what he wore. I pointed out he wore clothes not unlike everyone else and just because I have a vagina does not make me the natural person for this task. He also claims he is unable to take things out of the oven Confused
It drives me nuts because I want to be a equal partner in our relationship but also sets a terrible example for our boys. I will be teaching them self suffiency for the sake of my future dils!
Doesn't help that fil and bil are also like this very much enabled by mil. My sil otoh won't tolorate it and is one of the most idependant people I know. She is a legend! Grin

Tryingtobenice · 08/09/2012 00:45

Mrs Terry you are my hero of the day. Brilliant!

IvanaNap · 08/09/2012 00:51

Agree with the sentiment that she is idiotic rather than childlike. Be more specific to ease the pressure on your blood vessels- amazon do the books, loads of Brave things in The Disney Store, you've seen lots of X in Y Shop.

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 08/09/2012 01:04

Trying you are succeeding to be nice.

Rollergirl1 · 08/09/2012 01:06

Boring I know but also agree that the woman in the story relayed by the OP isn't childlike, just a total imbecile.

And the whole "women that talk in stupid girls voices" thing, does that really ever happen anymore? I think it was ressurected by The Fast Show and was funny, but what female would be stupid enough/savvy enough to pull that kind of stunt these days?

FurCoatSkimpyKnickers · 08/09/2012 01:10

I am surrounded by these 'needy' people, they drive me fucking crazy !!!

carabos · 08/09/2012 08:03

I know a woman who talks to her 12 year old DS in an exclusively baby voice, almost like their own personal language. As a result he hardly talks at all and won't talk to other adults unless he knows them well.

He sleeps in her bed and sucks his thumb. When she isn't doing ickle baby mummy wummy stuff with him she's screaming at him while he for example runs round a restaurant pulling stuff off the tables and eating profiteroles off the same plate as chicken main course.

She says we all want to be kids for as long as possible really and she wishes she could have had a childhood like his Hmm.

LiquidCosh · 08/09/2012 08:12

RobotLover68 I also thought she meant women who talk like iclke babies and pretend they cant say words properly for watever reason. I knew someone at school who did this, she still does to this day and I cant stand her!!!

LiquidCosh · 08/09/2012 08:16

That said I am not always successful so maybe there is something in the surrendered wife approach...!

lol WillNeverGetALicence

Your a better woman than me I dont think I could stand a SIL like that and I'd rather eat my own fingers than be the same to get my own way!
