To tell the lifeguard baby in my care was fine??

Took the lil boy (8months) I nanny swimming today. Baby is very confident in water and putting head/face in water frequently and laughing about it. I also dunked him a few times (requested by boss if he seemed ok with it).

Lifeguard told me to stop as he feared the baby would drown!?!? I told him it was all ok and under control. I fully had hold of baby and was pulling him up/out of water frequently so no chance of drowning.

YANBU but you probably freaked him out.

AgentZigzag · 06/09/2012 21:52

He wasn't BU to care, and you weren't BU to tell him the baby was fine.

I've done baby swimming lessons with DS since he was 8 weeks old - he was submerged fully in the first lesson and has been dunked regularly ever since, despite us getting some funny looks from life guards and other swimmers when we go on our own and i'm swimming him under water. If you're confident and comfortable that the child was okay then YANBU.

WorraLiberty · 06/09/2012 21:54

Did you stop when he told you?

Dordeydoo · 06/09/2012 21:54

I was impressed that he was paying attention and said something. Guess its his job

Didn't stop when he mentioned it as had reassured him that situation was under control and baby was fine.

Definately YANBU. I did this to my son and the lifeguard stared at us the whole time we were in. Very disconcerting, because you know what you're doing.

Funny because when we first took DD1 [now 21] at 6 weeks lifeguards told us to do this with her all mine are waterbabies

Kayano · 06/09/2012 22:01

I do this with 6mo dd. did it today Grin dd loves it

Dordeydoo · 06/09/2012 22:04

Baby was perfectly happy and instigated putting face in first when laid on his front.

YANBU to tell the lifeguard the baby was fine when he was clearly ine, obviously.

But I can understand why a lifeguard would worry and preffer to err on the side of caution on their watch. I'd mention it to the pool management who might need to get their infant swimming instructors to have a word with their lifeguards.

Dordeydoo · 06/09/2012 22:08

Outraged - good idea will do that when next swimming

I agree with Outraged - I'm guilty of scaring lifeguards myself when DD2 (6 at the time) jumped into the lap pool in Barnstaple (shallowest part = 2.5 metres) and started swimming laps. The poor guy was halfway out of his chair when I popped up onto the side and told him what lessons she's had and what levels she'd passed, but I gave him a fright and should have warned him in advance.

On the whole I think it's good that they err on the side of caution.
