To think poor spelling/grammar/punctuation gets you less sympathetic advice on MN?

Ok, a thread about..... many threads, really!
I just notice that when there's an OP where the spelling is not so great, the punctuation is less than perfect and there's an abundance of "txt spk", the original poster seems to get much more blunt comments in response than someone perhaps more articulate.

thumb you know as well as I do, that snidey comments about punctuation and grammar are just for point scoring.

It is very rare to not be able to understand a post at all. And if you don't a simple request for confirmation will suffice. Not 'Punctuation costs nothing so use it' or 'you'd think someone as apparently clever as you could spell wouldn't you' or 'your views are as dreadful as your grammar.'

These are just put downs from revolting people and they should be called on it.

I do Word - but you have made much more specific points in your last post and I agree entirely that people who say things like that are beyond rude - but that's not entirely what the thread was about, I think.

There have been quite a few posts that I have struggled to understand because there has been next to no punctuation; and when you have paragraphic sentences, it's hard to work out what the hell is being said - most people don't have the time to do it, so will just move on. To a point I agree that it is quite rare to completely fail to understand a post, but sometimes it's just too much effort to do so. Which limits the number of responses the poster is going to get.

Not keen on txt spk and i hate loooooong posts without paragraphs. I always notice bad grammar but i don't mind it.

However - spelling? Well my spelling is so awful i wouldn't notice it from someone else. I actually take so long to post sometimes because i'm struggling to spell properly because it gets picked up on here that i end up not posting at all, as the moment has passed :(

YANBU but MN is the last bastion of the judgemental. Admit wrong choices, wrong opinions or the wrong method of bringing up baby on MN and expect a virtual stoning. Brutal. Deprived of the usual visual clues about personality, intellect & social standing, the message board snob will leap on uneducated sentence construction and reach for a rock....

Trills · 07/09/2012 16:43

YANBU to think that you get less advice. I only respond to people if they have made it easy/pleasant for me to read what they have written. I don't know them or owe them anything, so I am only going to interact with them if I will find the interaction pleasant or interesting or stimulating.

Whether the advice that you do get is less sympathetic depends.

Advice is often neither sympathetic nor unsympathetic, it is just advice.

If you ask "what's the best belt to wear with this dress?" then the advice is not sympathetic or unsympathetic, it's just advice.

Bad spelling? Don't care

Bad punctuation? Don't care either

But text-speak makes me stabby. It's like that old advert for being a secretary (if u can rd ths msg u cn gt gd jb). I never quite understood how that worked either...

However, I wear comfortable shoes and am old so who cares what I think?
