How the hell did he get a job, is he not a benefit cheat by any other name.

No, he wouldn't have got that much money cheating benefits. He's much worse.

WhatYouLookingAt · 06/09/2012 18:57

No idea what you are talking about, but your aibu is?

Well I have to say much as I don't condone what he did (and lets face it he wasn't the only one) he is my local MP (using an old user name so as not to disclose my location Wink )and he is exceptionally good at a local level - he listens to his constituents and he gets things done.

I wrote to him with an issue I suspected would get brushed aside, had a personal letter back very quickly, followed by a visit. He took action with the issue I had and got things done. So in that respect, I have to say I can't agree entirely. Yes he was wrong but I can think of far worse politicians (Jeremy Hunt for example)

Mrs Choco Orange, I didn't even think of the money, I was just thinking of the morals, but you are quite right, this sticks in my craw, anyone claiming HB or tax credit, working tax credits, are subjected to rules which the most part i'm sure do, but if not a criminal record and courts. This is the same is it not?

Ninnyncphee, I lived in Yeovil, which is a RNAS station, my partner, now deceased, and myself served in the Royal Navy, When these long serving people no longer can live in married quarters and have to move into private rent or social housing, and have to rely on housing benefit, who will they look to, oh someone who cheated the system. I know you agree, but one good deed does not wipe out a greater wrong.

I'm not suggesting that at all. Simply saying that in my experience he has done good work for the local community and there are equally 'corrupt' politicians who I couldn't say that for.
And that I would sooner him than Jeremy Hunt :/

stephrick · 06/09/2012 19:19

I would suggest that we should accept neither.

I saw him at a pre-election debate in London. The then Education Secretary Ed Balls was there with Gove and Laws.

Laws came out of it the best. He knew his brief, he understood the issues. Gove ponced around trying to make everyone laugh, but in the end looked like an underinformed twit steeped in his own prejudices.

Ed Balls was a revelation - didn't expect to like him, but he was clear, concise and knew his stuff.

So while he did do something that was wrong, he is a very good politician, and a clever man. I would rather have him in the cabinet than some of the Tories who have been promoted. He made a mistake, lost his job and now needs to prove himself. I don't condone what he did either but he might be the best of a bad lot.

It doesn't say a lot for the quality of our politicians.

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 07/09/2012 14:27

the guy , in a trust position lied and stole public money and tried to justify it by claiming he wanted to protect his "dirty little secret " oh dear now , well, thats all right then , you are sentenced to 2 years on the naughty step then straight back to cushy govt. post -job done! benefit scroungers ? jail the bloody lot of them ! and dont come that sob story here , your guilty , take the benefit scrounger to the cells !

MarysBeard · 07/09/2012 14:31

I think in Laws' case he ended up tying himself in knots with lies over expenses because he didn't want his sexuality to be public. Yes, he was dishonest, but I don't see what he did was as blatantly terrible as some of the others.

Vagaceratops · 07/09/2012 14:41

The fact that he is replacing Sarah Teather pains me.

MarysBeard · 07/09/2012 15:00

Can't stand Sarah Teather.
