Is that too much to ask?

Brief summary

Kindle dies

Phone Kindle support centre

Support Centre advise over half and hour to switch and then switch it off again 5 times in total.

After this intensive trouble shooting, they cheerily announce my Kindle is dead.

It is one year and 3 weeks old they inform me. But as a good will gesture they will give me a 20% discount if I purchase it now.

Bloke seemed annoyed at my refusal. More annoyed when I asked nicely why it couldn't be repaired (too expensive) and if making me switch something off and on was really adaquate enough assessment to ascertain it was in fact dead.

He then said I will escalate your complaint and someone will be in touch with you in 24-48 hours.

In this time I discovered my kindle was actually easily fixed, gratis and easy to do yourself.

Finally after chasing up I got a response.

50% off a new kindle and a request for my bank card details Hmm I replied

I stated that I felt I had been coerced into buying a new Kindle under false pretences, and queried how many other people had possibly replaced when they had no need to.

Each time I chased I have been promised a speedy same day response.

I know it's dull and anal of me, but surely a response of some kind is in order? I suspect now they aren't getting any money out of me they are ignoring me.

But 3 weeks after a year?

OFT says 5 years reasonable time frame for electrical goods.

If it was a £20 hairdryer fair enough £100 - £150 Kindle justifed narking.

I am more annoyed by Kindle support being asked to switch something on and hold in place whilst some one counts to 20 for me in case I fuck that bit up!

I also think having one switch to do everything is stupid, switches wear out before other components, why not an actual reset button that you can access with a pin/biro?

Was just about to say that people have successfully made companies replace washing machines, etc that have died when just over a year old. Not sure a kindle would be in the same class but it should be.

No way should you have to replace them every 13 months. I don't think I'll replace mine when it dies. I've ready too much bad stuff about them now.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/09/2012 13:59

I think my kindle does have a reset that you get to by sticking a pin up it. Have an old keyboard model. There's a round hole near the charger port, I seem to remember sticking something up there to reset.

honeydragon · 04/09/2012 14:18

Yes, in the first ones it was accessible.

Buddhastic · 04/09/2012 15:08

Ah, worth a try but no luck for me. The screen is frozen and full of lines even when the battery is taken out. I did find the reset button so will keep that in mind if any of our other ones stop working.

Hope you get some joy with Amazon, honeydragon.

MNhoneydragonHQ · 05/09/2012 16:41

Aaaah if you have lines on the screen that's beyond my remit. Once you get bleeding they are buggered.

That's why I am so annoyed. I explained the screen wasn't knackered, simply frozen and the guy would not listen at all. I worked in a call centre for years so I was polite, patient accepted he had to do his thing, despite his complete disinterest.

It was like her was just getting the pretending to help bit out the way so he could ask for some money.

Called yesterday, was assured the matter was being dealt with. Got put on hold for ages. They advised that I had been contacted with a 50% discount. I said I had responded to that offer. Was told I'd be contacted very shortly.

Still nothing. Nada.

Pocketsocks · 05/09/2012 16:46

I used to want a kindle, now not so much!

MNhoneydragonHQ · 05/09/2012 16:49

Sorry pocketsocks. Blush

They are fabulous little things. I am just so CROSS, of the grabbiness of Amazon.

NadiaWadia · 05/09/2012 17:07

And then there is fact that they pay NO UK TAX, having cleverly sited their UK head office in Luxembourg or somewhere. I am starting to think Amazon are a BAD Company although I can't stop myself using them!

I really wanted a Kindle as well, and previous to these threads that have popped up just recently I'd always heard they were very good at replacing. Obviously not now though.

It's me or Beardy.

ENormaSnob · 05/09/2012 17:45

Surely under the sale of goods act they should last longer than 13 months?

MNhoneydragonHQ · 05/09/2012 17:48

Enorma I pointed that out, this is the response I got to the sale of goods act

My name is and I represent the Executive Customer Relations Group within Amazon.co.uk and in this capacity, your correspondence has been brought to my attention.

We are aware of our obligations as a retailer under the relevant consumer legislation such as the Sale of Goods Act in the UK, and have no intention of contracting out of any mandatory laws. Under the Sale of Goods Act, a consumer is granted recourse against a seller of goods if those goods were defective at the time of purchase.

This may include, in certain circumstances, repair, refund or replacement but only to the extent that doing so is not disproportionate to the value of the goods, having regard to the use the customer has already had of the goods and the nature of the goods.

The current offer available for this situation is as follows:

Kindle for £71.20 at a discount of £17.80 plus the cost of delivery of the replacement

Kindle Touch Wi-Fi for £87.20 at a discount of £21.80 plus the cost of delivery of the replacement.

These are new devices and will come with a 12 month warranty.

I responded to this in kind. I have heard nothing back despite repeated calls and emails.

MNhoneydragonHQ · 05/09/2012 17:49

oooh that's interesting

MNhoneydragonHQ · 05/09/2012 17:50

My name edit blanked it Confused

MNhoneydragonHQ · 06/09/2012 14:06

That sort of stuff winds me up. I left a crap review on the joules website ages ago, polite but totally slagging off the product. They never published it.

Some0ne · 06/09/2012 16:21

I had the lines issue a while ago, it means the glass inside the screen is broken. It can't be repaired.

Mine was still under warranty, and they replaced it even though I confessed to the helpdesk person that my toddler had dropped it on the floor Blush

VintageEbonyGold · 06/09/2012 19:15

This will be the most boring post of mn.

T'is a global, not just first world problem, as the metal used in computer components are mined in developing countries where miners can be killed for actually requesting payment for their work mining causing more poverty and social uprisings etc.

Constant, excessive replacements of products exaberbate this.

Plus, as an ex electrical repairer, the first thing to do is take it apart and dust it/dry wipe the contacts.

MNhoneydragonHQ · 06/09/2012 19:45

Hurrah after ANOTHER phone call and a email sent in capitals that stated

WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME? IT'S RUDE?

They responded!

They have credited my account to replace my non broken fixed Kindle.

However a further phone call has resulted on them actually stating they will deal with this issue. It is a wasteful irresponsible attitude and they will investigate matters further.

I am also allowed to keep the credit. Grin

But had they simply said when I called in, Blimy HD your Kindle sounds buggered, pay us £20.00 and we'll fix it I would have handed over with out a thought.

Instead they ignored me I fixed it and got cross and they ignored me more.

So for everyone else in kindle misery. Just email them, repeatedly, call daily and refuse to be transferred to Kindle support on the basis they are the cause of your misery and get deleted from Facebook by Amazon.

Or use your Kindle as a coaster, get a library card and have an actual life Grin
