How about for Dads?
Me and DH have being toying with the idea of DC number 3. However he is 43 (I'm 32) and I don't really want to TTC this year as I've too much on socially and work wise. But it's looking like DH is going to be about 45 at this rate. AIBU in thinking that's too old???

Nope, I don't think a man of 45 is too old to be a new Dad.

It's quite common.

GlitterySkulls · 04/09/2012 12:16

my dad was 53 when i was born, so, no, i don't think it's too old.

different strokes for different folks, though- what does your DH think?

bobbledunk · 04/09/2012 12:17

It's not too old yet but if you really want children you'd want to get on with it, he's getting old and your not getting any younger either, you're actually elderly in medical pregnancy terms.

SPsFanjoSponsoredByFemFresh · 04/09/2012 12:19

My mum was 37 and 38 when had my sister and brother. My stepdad was 50 and 51 when she had them.

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 04/09/2012 12:19

My dh was 43 when we had our youngest, so no I don't think it's too old :)

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 04/09/2012 12:21

It's not too old. Now get cracking! Grin

tanfastic · 04/09/2012 12:21

I was 36 and dh 43 when we had our first. We tried for a second last year when he was 46 but it never happened and we've given up now. So I don't think it's too old.

However when dh picked up ds from nursery the other day one of the staff said to my ds "your grandad is here". My dh was mortified.

iseenodust · 04/09/2012 12:22

Not too old...but are your expectations of speed/success at TTC on the high side?

Caerlaverock · 04/09/2012 12:23

Men's fertility can dwindle as well as women's I would crack on if I were you

squoosh · 04/09/2012 12:25

As an aside Gavin Esler who sometimes presents Newsnight is a new Dad and he's 59. I was more shocked at finding out he's 59 than I was at him having a new baby.

He looks vvvvv good for 59.

hatesponge · 04/09/2012 12:27

I would never say 45 was too old. My dad was 49 when I was born, I was his first (and only) child.

Most of my friends had dads half his age, but my dad had so much more life experience I never minded that he was so much older :)

Thumbwitch · 04/09/2012 12:30

Depends how old he is in attitude, but I'd say it's fine.

DH's dad was 42 when DH was born; this wouldn't have been an issue if he'd been completely healthy but he wasn't. Sadly he died just before DH's 18th birthday, but that was due to his health condition rather than his age.

I have a friend who was 46 when his first child was born and nearly 50 when the next ones turned up - but he's always been young at heart so can't see a problem.

Another friend married a man nearly twice her age, who already had grown-up children - she had 3 more with him (he was in his 60s) and he, despite inital doubts, couldn't be happier.

Age is a state of mind a lot of the time.

Redknickerswillstoptrains · 04/09/2012 12:37

My DH was 50 when our youngest was born, all of our 3 were conceived when he was over 40,last baby was a surprise so no ttc needed.

woollywomble · 04/09/2012 13:30

I'm currently 41 and pregnant with DC3 and my DH is 52, so if you're old we're ancient!! This was a surprise pregnancy though and we're still trying to get our heads around it ourselves to be honest. We also have two DDs aged 6 and 9, so he was 43 when our eldest was born.

AnnTeak · 04/09/2012 13:49

It's not too old but I agree with others that you need to get cracking at your age.

hairytale · 04/09/2012 13:51

I became a mother at 43 and nine months and DP was 39 and 10 months. Both first timers. HTH.

Moominsarescary · 04/09/2012 14:05

32 old? I didn't have ds3 until nearly 33 and have since had ds4 and I'm pregnant with ds5 now at 34. Didn't realise I was so old.

squoosh · 04/09/2012 14:07

a pregnancy each for ages 33, 34, 35? Wowzers!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 04/09/2012 14:13

DH was 60 when DD was born.

We paid her final pre-school bill with his first state pension payment.

Do I win? Grin

Ephiny · 04/09/2012 14:24

Not too old at all, and surely not unusual?

NarkedRaspberry · 04/09/2012 14:26

It's worth remembering that quality of sperm decreases as men get older.

dawntigga · 04/09/2012 14:29

What the fuck does it have to do with anyone else? If you've got working sperm and a viable egg with somewhere to host who's business is it of anyone else s?

squoosh yes ds3 was born last march, ds 4 was due feb this year but I lost him at 20 weeks and ds 5 is due feb next year. We were planning on having all 3 under 2. I do seem to have been pregnant for a long time. I won't be doing it again next year though. I'd like some Wine ds 1 and 2 are alot older though, ds 1 will be 18 in feb!
