To think 'housework cutsthe risk of breast cancer' is a pathetic headline

Esp as the article says the study showed that active women who take part in regular exercise are 13% less likely to get breast cancer and those who do moderate exercise 8% less likely to develop it?

Although I'm sure looking at lists about what gives you cancer can give you cancer.

My DH has already made a joke about how I should do all the housework from now on (Hmm it was oh so funny honestly how I laughed])

Why did housework have to come into it though? Because its deemed a woman's exercise?

Seriously fuck that hands DH his pinny

The sky article barely even mentions housework which is why I was AngryHmm and started the thread

I suspect f had read that bbc one first I would be a bit more understanding as to why they had that headline (although I would still make DH do all the work on me hols lol)

The international authors said their results suggested that moderate forms of physical activity, such as housework, may be more important than less frequent but more intense recreational physical activity in reducing breast cancer risk.

So they could have been mentioned any moderate form of physical activity, but to make a headline, the journalists chose 'housework'. I am no scientists, but I will take a risk, and without the benefit of any research, I will put my self out on a limb and guess that moderate housework is also beneficial to the health of men.

(I am no scientist)

I didn't even know housework was a form of excercise, so when working ( i am a cleaner i do over 7 hours of excersice a day, diet ( wonders why i am still overweight)

ArthurShappey · 04/09/2012 08:12

YANBU exercise is the key... Admittedly housework is a form of exercise but stil!! Angry
Pathetic headline!

WhatYouLookingAt · 04/09/2012 08:12

Well you know, if you will get those girly cancers its probably your own fault (in DM?Sky world) and if they can make you a slovenly slattern at the same time, all the better. women, know you dirty disease ridden place!

CakeMeIAmYours · 04/09/2012 08:13

Oh, I think you're being a bit harsh...

It is a fact that exercise cuts the risk of cancer (and dementia, interestingly) but a lot of people interpret 'exercise' as a hardcore session in the gym when the reality is that low level activity (such as housework) also counts as 'exercise'.

Being charitable, I would think that headline is trying to get the point across that activities that most people wouldn't consider as 'exercise' are also beneficial.

CakeMeIAmYours · 04/09/2012 08:13

Lots of x posts there Blush

Kayano · 04/09/2012 08:17

But it could have been 'walking around town' or 'walking to your friends
House' or any other moderate exercise

SDeuchars..Blush. Yes that's what I meant. Blush. I've just spent half the night consoling a teething 7 month old, and then got up at 7am thanks to my screaming neighbours. Thanks for correcting me Grin.

CakeMeIAmYours · 04/09/2012 08:34

I see your point, and agree that it is unfortunate that the link is there between what is generally a female cancer and stereotypically a female role.

I just think that if you look hard enough, you can see misogyny in pretty much everything around you and I fear that this devalues the feminist message.

I don't think this 'issue' is enough to warrant a 'call to arms'. The US right's approach to Womens' reproductive rights? Very much so. This headline? Small beer in comparison.

WhatYouLookingAt · 04/09/2012 08:35

housework doesn't count as exercise the way I do it.

Kayano · 04/09/2012 09:11

I haven't come at this from a 'call to arms feminist approach' though really have I?

I've come at this from a 'as if!' approach while DH does the dishes

Shopping Cuts Risk of Breast Cancer. Better? Grin

scaevola · 04/09/2012 10:10

Well, it's a good headline because

a) it made someone think about it enough to reproduce it in one of the busiest forums on a site as large as MN
b) it's provoked responses considering all sorts of angles, and
c) it's reminded everyone of the uncontroversial message is that exercise is good for your health, and that encompasses many sorts of activities not just sport.
