Is this odd? Or am I just not used to living in a house.

Door just went, 2 lads probably about 18 asking if I want my grass cut. Confused

Is this a normal thing?

I'm probably just being paranoid.

ProudNeathGirl · 03/09/2012 19:01

Normal enough. They just want to earn some honest pocket money.

RoomForASmallOne · 03/09/2012 19:01

Quite normal though they sound older than i would be used to tbh

Most kids round here would be 12+.

Did they have a lawnmower with them??

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 03/09/2012 19:02

Sounds normal to me, too. Enterprising young lads looking to make a bit of cash.

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 19:02

Normal.

Catsmamma · 03/09/2012 19:04

probably going to be another thread from a harassed parent somewhere ranting about sending their teens out to get off their arses and find something to do!!!

EauRouge · 03/09/2012 19:05

Normal around here, although they are usually younger and offering to wash cars.

LadySybildeChocolate · 03/09/2012 19:05

They are in need of beer money, it's ingenious!

SchrodingersMew · 03/09/2012 19:05

Thanks, I'm just not used to the random people coming to the door. :o

Just seemed odd as they didn't have any grass cutting things in sight and it's about to rain!

I shall stop being a paranoid loon! :o wishes she had said yes now

SchrodingersMew · 03/09/2012 19:07

Cats I shall keep an eye out as it's quite probable.

I would have said yes. And they could have washed my car as well.

And painted my fence.

And swept the driveway.

SchrodingersMew · 03/09/2012 19:21

You're making me really regret not saying yes now! We've had a load of trouble recently from youths around here and have just moved so I guess I have just tarred them all with the same brush and now I feel really guilty. :(

My 13 yr old, my 11 yr old and one of their friends made a good bit of pocket money during the summer going around asking neighbours if they wanted any jobs doing, grass cut, digging etc. It kept them out of trouble :)

SchrodingersMew · 03/09/2012 19:25

Wouldn't have thought twice if it was a 13 and 11yo, I think it was just because they were late teens.

They'll be glad I said no, it's pissing it down and our lawn is awful. :)

Before employing them, I would ask how much they are going to charge.

had a party yesterday and one of the guests helped me to put a heavy patio table onto the lawn. No one helped me put it back. This morning, I had a plumber come to do arranged work and I asked him to help me move the table back. He did - for nothing. I was so pleased to find that there are nice workers out there - and he didn't charge an arm and a leg for the plumbing work either.

SchrodingersMew · 03/09/2012 20:45

I'll never know now how much they would have charged as I have no idea who they are. :( Don't think it would apply anyways as we don't have a lawnmower yet, haha.

That was really nice of the plumber. :) Hopefully the plumbing work was up to scratch too!

I get an old fella coming round and asking me if want lawn doing. He charges 4 quid and he sweeps up after his self too.

SchrodingersMew · 03/09/2012 21:22

£4 quid!? Is your garden teeny? now really really hopes they come back!

Beamur · 03/09/2012 21:24

I got my car (sort of) washed by a couple of local kids today. My DD tried to help and they spent ages gassing to each other! I know them though and gave them a couple of quid for their efforts.

KenLeeeeeee · 03/09/2012 21:26

I used to love going round to my grandmother's neighbours for "bob-a-job" stuff. I made £3 one weekend just from picking up leaves from their lawns Grin

whatsoever · 03/09/2012 21:26

I've never had anyone knocking on my door offering odd jobs tbh, and I've lived in houses since 2008 (flats before that).

Were they dragging a lawnmower round? I don't understand what they would mow your lawn with otherwise?

SchrodingersMew · 03/09/2012 21:33

Nope, no lawn mower or anything, just made me paranoid because it was 7pm, getting dark and about to pour with rain.

KenLeeeeee (her singing gets stuck in my head everytime I see you post!) I tried to do this as a kid too just not at 18, in primary school me and a couple of mates actually tried to make money by going out on the council estate we lived at in fancy dress and singing. Blush

*Beamur" I hope they let DD share the wages! :o

whatsoever my kids dont carry a lawnmover around either :), they knock on doors and if someone wants their grass cut then they arrange a time to come back and do it!

catgirl2012 · 04/09/2012 08:52

Normal

We had some the other week offering to wash cars.

They did a good job and I was impressed with their entrepenurial spirit :)
