To wonder what to do with all this time when youngest starts school?

My youngest son is starting school this week and I have been lucky to be able to stay at home with him, and currently work Sundays in a shop.

I'm wondering what I am going to do with all my free time! I know realistically I should be able to fill it just by going to the gym regularly, general cleaning etc and I have some sorting out I need to do.

I am looking for a job during the week as my husband is going back onto shifts after a secondment so childcare is gong to be awkward, plus I really don't like working weekends! But jobs are few and far between.

There should hopefully be some extra shifts in work soon but probably not much.

I know the time is probably going to fly by but I am going to find it strange! I am going to arrange to meet friends for a child free lunch etc occasionally but can't afford to do this every day and they work p/t so aren't free all the time.

Voluntary work?
Develop a hobby into business?

Yes, YABU :-D

Do you have any DIY/decorating/gardening projects outstanding? Before you know it, it will be half term.

Then you'll have all the Christmas shopping with all the associated emptying of cupboards related to outgrown clothes, toys and discarded games for your DC to take you into the New Year.
Enjoy the peace, while it lasts!

Ive just started a few hobbies (making modern cushions by knitting, patchwork and tapestry) got times of gym classes, taken on extra vol work and hoping to be able to take on more work (self-employed). The house will seem empty

Mintyy · 03/09/2012 17:42

You are not being unreasonable to wonder.

littlemisssunny · 03/09/2012 18:07

Good idea about a hobby, I have fancied trying knitting or something for a while so might give it a go.

I have been volunteering one morning a week in school and asked to move up to another year as I don't want to be in
Reception class this time, but they never got back to me after me asking the head teacher a few times, might have to ask again once they start back, communication isn't their strong point!!

I went back to school myself and improved a little on the mess I had made of my own time at school.

firawla · 03/09/2012 19:19

I'm meaning to volunteer for homestart once mine are all in school (i got a few years left yet though!) but it sounds quite good - you get to help people and have heard it helped some people get training or enter into a career if you are interested in that kind of field?

littlemisssunny · 03/09/2012 19:22

Thats a good idea Firawla I shall look into that, I wish I had known about home start when I had Pnd with my youngest, and it would be nice to feel I could make a difference to someone's life!

I'm planning to enjoy the quite.

myBOYSareBONKERS · 03/09/2012 20:04

I seized the opportunity to have a major de-clutter and set up a selling page on facebook.

I do work two days a week though.

I also got involved with the PTA at school and volunteered with reading in class.

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/09/2012 20:08

I'm going to have 2 free days a week from this week - I am so excited!

Have a massive list of things to do including decorating/de-cluttering etc etc

When my youngest starts fulltime next september I will look into voluntary work.

Shellywelly1973 · 03/09/2012 20:24

I am in the same position. Its 11 years since i was child free in the day!

During the holidays I've gone from wishing the holidays away to dreading plb 1st day at school.

So i started to make a list of what I want to do&try. So after doing a massive spring clean, decorating the bathroom, loo, kitchen&living room. Im going to try piliates(sp?),college, courses in setting up my own business. IT courses and Im determined to beat my maths phobia! Visit my mum more often&get to see my best friend more then 1or 2times a year. Go hairdressers more then 3times a year...Now I've started thinking about things to do i seem to keep coming up with more&more ideas!!

Goofymum · 03/09/2012 20:38

Apply to be a school governor or get involved in the school some way?

lljkk · 03/09/2012 20:53

All I know is that after PLB started nursery (16.5 hours/ week), I was busy. No shortage of stuff to do.

I wrote a schedule now that PLB is starting school:

Mondays: hobby (am taking a class until 1/2 term)
Tues: tidy up house, declutter, clean
Weds: job hunt
Thurs: hobby, volunteer?
Fri: shopping errands, volunteer?

After commuting, it's only 25 hours/week, realistically, and only in term time.

EmmaNemms · 03/09/2012 20:58

I've just sold my business plus no 4 child starting at school in two days! I am looking forward to a massive decluttering session plus gym plus some voluntary work. Only till Christmas though, will be getting new business going!

bigkidsdidit · 03/09/2012 21:03

If I had free time a the moment I would

Clear out my wardrobes and give loads to charity
Put all my photos in albums
Cook a new recipe every day and practice them till they were awesome
Finish knitting my cardigan ( you should take up knitting it's wonderful)
Decorate
Paint some furniture

Once I'd got all that done I'd volunteer

Enjoy :)
