live in a quiet street where parking is a nightmare due to most of the people living in it having made their small front gardens into a drive, usual shite. we deliberately haven't as we like to look out onto a garden as opposed to the front bonnet. some fucking arse has at a guess either moved into the street/changed jobs or just likes using it as a dumping ground but lives elsewhere but the last few months there are LOTS of the same company van appearing in the few parking spaces and it looks like a company forecourt, nothing wrong legally here, i know. to make matters worse these vans barely get used, they sit there for 1/2 weeks. how fucking inconsiderate, i think the twat is staying with a neighbour as i saw him going up their path the other night, fancy the neighbour not saying something. there is space at the top of the road where considerate people usually park vans. i need to park my car outside mine for work reasons although accept i often can't as i don't have a drive but most people tend to use their car regularly so when a car is out the front it rarely stays for more than a day or two. fucking pissed off and stressed out, want to take a pair of keys to the fucking thing

Why do you need to park in front of your house? Hmm

Look - either build a drive or accept that you do not own the space in front of your house, much as you would like to.

We used to live on a terraced street and yes parking was a pita. That's what happens in streets like that.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 03/09/2012 17:50

I live on a road like this and it is horrible so YANBU, it might be legal but it is incredibly inconsiderate. Unless you've been in this situation then you have no idea what a nightmare it is - I certainly didn't until we moved here. The houses on the opposite side of the road have drives but the ones on our side are up a slope so there's no option to put a drive in. The house opposite us has a car on the drive and then parks three vans, a minibus and three more cars on our side of the road. They are lovely people but it drives everyone on this side insane.

Gentleness · 03/09/2012 17:56

It isn't illegal and loads of people here will rant saying YABU to expect anything better. But I disagree with them. Not at all unreasonable to wish for courteous, thoughtful, caring behaviour. Maybe unreasonable to EXPECT it from people who are more concerned with the letter of the law than a sense of community.

Feel for you. (but don't key the van).

Time for a piece in the local paper with a grumpy face and crossed arms in front of the vans I think. Sad

YANBU if the vans came and went reguarly it wouldn't be as bad but if they are there for weeks at a time I wouldn't be happy.

scarletforya · 03/09/2012 18:04

Why don't you just cobblelock the garden? I kno you say you don't like looking at the bonnet of your car, but you can't enjoy the view now anyway with all the vans parked around the place.

Life is too short to be fretting about other peoples parking habits, if you have your own driveway you don't have to worry about it.

The thing about parking on the street is you have no rights, it's first come first served.

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 18:28

If it's legally parked I can't see the problem Confused

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2012 18:29

Even for weeks on end valium?

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 18:34

My car which is the size of a small van is parked on the street for weeks and weeks.

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2012 18:38

But you must use it, rather than it just being parked?

SoupDragon · 03/09/2012 18:39

Is it 1/2 weeks they are left there for or 3/4?

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 18:40

sparkling not often tbh, I realised today was the first day I had driven anywhere for about 2 weeks. When we lived in our old house the car only moved once a month.

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2012 18:43

I bet all the neighbours are talking about you valium. But I expect it's obvious you aren't running a double glazing business or anything. Grin

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 18:45

That's ok, I talk about them Wink

You can park where you like though as long as it's legal.

headinhands · 03/09/2012 18:46

I really don't see what right you have to get so angry! So it's inconsiderate to park a van in a street?

KenLeeeeeee · 03/09/2012 18:47

YAB-a bit-U but I totally sympathise. I used to have a massive red van (insulation company I think) park outside my front window for days on end, completely obscuring my view and blocking the natural light really badly. In the end, after about 2 months of it, I lost it a bit, rang the company head office and complained (gave them the van's reg number etc). I never saw the van again. Grin

I was probably being totally batshit crazy by ringing and complaining but it was glorious having my view back!

McHappyPants2012 · 03/09/2012 18:47

We as a street are trying to get a disabled spot gone, the parking spot is very misused to put broken down cars of the disabled person brother.

mayorquimby · 03/09/2012 18:47

"Maybe unreasonable to EXPECT it from people who are more concerned with the letter of the law than a sense of community."

Nothing to do with the letter of the law in my case, more that I see the law as reflecting common sense and consideration.
For me someone who expects to be able to claim some entitlement over a public space paid for by taxes is far more unreasonable and less likely to have a sense of community

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2012 18:48

Yes, that's it really. You can park where you like. Sometimes when I go and visit people who have really tight parking I have to ask them if I am parked ok because I don't want to upset anyone. Sad

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 18:49

What's the difference between a van and a car - am I missing something?

headinhands · 03/09/2012 18:50

How the hell can you describe a van parked on a street as a nightmare? I'm not sure a horror movie based on such a plot would be in danger of breaking any box office records Grin

MrsKeithRichards · 03/09/2012 18:51

God I posted twice and still didn't make my point properly! Dh left his van outside the grumpy neighbour's house for 2 weeks. We were fed up with him parking practically going bumper to bumper with us or taking up 3 spaces just to make sure he got his car at his gate.

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/09/2012 18:55

Ring the firm and tell them what is happening, If they refuse to do anything ring the council. A company that has a fleet of vehicles has to provide the vehicles with a place to park.

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2012 19:14

I was imagining a huge transit van or 3 valium. Am I wrong bitof?

bitofcheese · 03/09/2012 19:23

i have no problem with people parking there in normal circumstances, people come and go, i too often park outside other peoples homes but i use my car frequently as do most people so am not there for long. fwiw i know it can be annoying so i always do my best to dump my car (when i can't get outside my home, most of the time) at the top of the street where there is a brick wall and it isn't infront of someone's home. my only moan is purely that a/there are a growing number of these vans in the road (all belonging to the same company), last count 4 (& rising weekly) and b/he rarely uses any of them, they can stay put for weeks. a neighbour of mine (who has a drive) was moaning to me about it oddly enough, i didn't mention it, he did, it seemed to really piss him off which i found funny as it doesn't directly affect him. thanks for your infor ie worra. tbh, i am not naturally confrontational and don't really want to go down the path of ie getting busy and going to the council etc but it is handy to know that i maybe able to do somethng about it if it got worse and worse ie every spot in the street with one of these company vans. i am sure it will be bothering other people ie if they have visitors, these vans just sit there. this is different to a winge about someone parking outside, i know people can and there is nothing wrong with it, it is just someone's company dumping loads of the buggers and not using them for weeks. wouldn't be so bad if they used them as we would be sharing the space but he is a space hogger. btw, i don't need to park outside my house often, i am used to walking from the top of the road but i am a dealer and sometimes need to unload stock or load the car and can't even double park if someone is parked opposite..... this is when it is a real pain
