WIBU? Computer scam I think...

Just had a phonecall from 'steve' from 'Windows technical support'. Asked me if I was the lady of the house! Then asked if I was the computer user. Then said that there were error messages coming up from the IP address. He didn't know my name or anything. I told him he was scamming me and that he should never call again because I would scream at him for trying to scam me and more gullible people. And then I demonstrated a little bit Blush and put the phone down.

He called back!

I was so cross I put my 13 year old on and told him to say he wasn't allowed to talk to strangers and hang up.

Please reassure me it was a scam and I've not just deafened some poor bloke who was only doing his job. Feel guilty now, purely because he phoned back.... Blush

I usually talk to them for a while. Basically the longer they talk to me the less time they have to find someone more vulnerable that might fall for it.

The last call I had the guy got very offensive, and basically threatened to rape me in the middle of the night. He didn't like it when I laughed at him, but that could have really upset someone else, so I only recommend keeping them on the line if you have a thick skin.

Total scam - and jeezy is right, if you keep them on the line as long as possible, they're not calling someone who will fall for it.

You can have a lot of fun with them if you're in the mood - I've got a spiel in mind for the next time they call me .

This happened to me recently but because I was expecting a call from technical support I thought everything was in order. We got as far as my laptop being remotely controlled and me putting in my bank details for some special kind of microsoft security. Thank god my card did not go through. Didn't stop the man telling me to phone my bank for them to authorise payment - which I did not. However I did google the name of the supposed company and found them to be scammers. Cue calls to my bank and to my isp provider to change my ip address. They did deign to phone me back the following week, I told them to bogoff and never call my number again. Think if this were to happen again I shall give the phone to my DS telling him that grandad's on the line Grin.

Oh YWNBU. Seems I got carried away.

Telling them you have a man from Microsoft technical support currently looking at your computer, and would like to speak to his "collegue" gets them off the line prompto.

Dh just bores them with technical detail they don't understand.

I've had several while being at home in the holidays.

"I don't have a computer" works well. Not much they can say to that.

I also tried my hardest to follow his instructions on a MacBook. This really annoyed him, when he eventually worked out what the problem was.
