LAURA ASHLEY RIPPING ME OFF?!

LuckyMumOfTwinBoyz · 03/09/2012 13:22

I bought wallpaper from Laura Ashley to decorate my lounge with. I was chuffed as there was a sale on and it happened to include the wallpaper I wanted.
I asked the assistant if I could return any unused rolls as I had guestimated the amount. He assured me that it was no problem at all as long as the rolls were sealed and I had the receipt.
I spent £220-95. , and once the decorating was complete had 3 rolls of wallpaper left over.
I took them back to the store with the receipt, to be told I could not return them as it was over the 28 days. The rolls should have cost £35 each but I had got them for £25.20 each, meaning I wanted £75.60 refunding. I was offered nothing!!! I said I had no idea it was within the 28 day policy and that the member of staff never told me that, I wasn't even offed a credit note.
I was gutted, as It's a lot of money . The female staff member said " Sorry sweetheart maybe you could keep them as spares or just try and sell them on or something!"
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm fuming!

Why did you wait a month before returning them? That seems like a long time to me.

And how much for a roll?

savoycabbage · 03/09/2012 13:26

Haven't we done this before Confused? They have shocking customer service I think.

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 13:26

Take it back and refuse to move until you get at the very least a credit note, stand firm!

PureMorning · 03/09/2012 13:26

I don't think they've ripped you off. Most shops go with a 28 day refund policy. Its written on the backs off the receipts and usually a sign by till

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 03/09/2012 13:27

You are outside the 28 days so they don't have to give you anything.

Can't you sell them on?

PureMorning · 03/09/2012 13:27

Also try emailing them directly, you might get a good will good will gesture

LuckyMumOfTwinBoyz · 03/09/2012 13:27

I bought it spur of the moment as the sale was on and I wasn't ready to start the decorating yet, ie strip walls, do all the woodwork painting etc etc. I have two toddlers so can only decorate at night time plus get everything else done!!!

They aren't obliged to refund you legally.

You should have measured the room properly.

Thats by-the-by - email Head Office and complain, that will might get you a refund, even though legally you aren't entitled to it, although their website does state a 28 day returns policy.

BerthaKitt · 03/09/2012 13:29

I think YABU. Virtually no retailer offers a returns policy with no end date and additionally, as you bought the paper discounted, it was presumably end of line. They don't want to find themselves landed with three rolls of out of production wallpaper at some unknown point in the future.

However it would have been better service if the member of staff had drawn your attention to the time limit when s/he told you you could return the paper.

takingthestairs · 03/09/2012 13:30

It is very frustrating, but they don't have to refund you at all.
It is your responsibility to check the terms and conditions of refunds, which will have been written either on your receipt or on a sign in the shop. It is not the shop's responsibility to make sure you're 100% aware of the terms and conditions.

If the goods are not faulty, they don't actually have to refund you at all. In or out of the 28 day period, they are doing their customers a favour by offering refunds.

I understand it is very frustrating, but you are more likely to get them to help you out or even give you a shop credit if you are nice to them and admit you didn't pay attention rather than getting cross.
Maybe a nicely worded email to their customers services to see if they can help you?

LuckyMumOfTwinBoyz · 03/09/2012 13:30

To be fair I hadn't checked the receipt date when I walked in the shop so I take responsibility for that, but I know hand on heart that other stores would just have kept good customer relations and offered me a credit note?

If it was in the sale they were trying to get rid of it. Why would they want it back, when they didn't have to take it?

Nanny0gg · 03/09/2012 13:33

Not necessarily.
Next is only 8 or 10 days now.
The onus was on you to check.

(And some stores will only give 7 days when it's sale items).

Sorry. Your fault not theirs.

LuckyMumOfTwinBoyz · 03/09/2012 13:36

Thanks for all your comments and I will try Emailing Customer Services about this. It isn't end of line wallpaper it was just a Home Promotion as they call it, so the discount won't apply for long, another reason I thought they'd take it back,To sell on at full price.

Hey Ho lesson learnt and all that ;)

I'm having similar myself. Except they have offered me vouchers but I want a refund. My circumstances are a bit different in that the wallpaper was (according to their website) supposed to have been dispatched on a certain date (which would have been convenient for me/decorator) and it was actually sent to me a few weeks after (which wasn't convenient) without any prior notice. My argument is that when my order was taken the salesperson should have told me "for goodness sake don't believe what you read on our website as we make it up as we go along" (well something along those lines).
The upshot was that by the time I'd managed to get the wallpaper put up I was outside the 28 day return policy. There are a few other extenuating circumstances as to why I feel I should get a refund but I'd rather not say on here as I'll probably out myself in RL!
Incidentally, Laura Ashley are having "sales" all the time so buying the wallpaper at a reduced price probably wasn't (well not in my case) getting rid of old stock.

RuleBritannia · 03/09/2012 15:19

I bought some trousers in M&S at end of June and the receipt said that, if I didn't want them, they should be returned by 7 July. They turned out to be too long for my legs so it was with trepidation that I took them back last week. Yes, I know I'd had them a long time but I don't go into local town very often.

I was pleased to have a nice assistant who gave me a credit note. I got the full price on one pair and the other pair is in a sale so I got the current sale price. I was satisfied. There was nothing wrong with them so Sale of Goods Act didn't apply and I was out of date to take them back - with the receipt. One of my mottos is: If You Don't Ask, You Don't Get.

There is a time limit on the credit note though - a year hence! Good customer relations.

EdMcDunnough · 03/09/2012 15:26

Oh gosh I feel for you, but I think your best chance is to email or ring customer service at head office.

I had to do this with them too.

I bought curtains in a closing down sale and to be fair they were hugely reduced - but I asked then and there is I could return them, and the sales person said yes, of course.

I took them back to the nearby shop a couple of weeks, or was it days, later - with the receipt - and they said no, you can't return these, they were in the clearance, or somesuch rubbish - or we can't take them as they cam from another store.

I don't remember but it was definitely within a few weeks and with the receipt.
I had a lot of to and froing with customer service who eventually told the store to exchange them for other stuff. But it took ages and they were well huffy in the shop. It was awful. and very unreasonable.

whoneedssleepanyway · 03/09/2012 16:43

Can you go to a different laura ashley without the receipt, say you lost it and bought the wallpaper 3 weeks ago and have decorated now and bought too much and could they give you a credit note....

LuckyMumOfTwinBoyz · 03/09/2012 16:58

I was thinking about doing exactly that! Honesty ( with receipt) got me no where! Wondered too if I'd get a credit note if I'd lost my receipt...

I think M&S are spot on with customer relations, always happy to help the customer unlike LA!!!

Sorry this message comes months after your hassle with Laura Ashley. I've had the same predicament where I couldn't get a refund of wallpaper that was in the sale due to me returning it after 28 days. However, I have 2 shops near me so decided to go to the other one and say I'd lost my receipt and could I have a credit note. That way, they didn't know when I'd bought it. This route was fine but I wasn't allowed a credit note, but could choose something to the same value to be refunded whilst there. Luckily, the wallpaper sale had finished so I actually had credit totalling more than I'd spent and managed to get a bargain white duvet cover in the bedding sale that had started! It worked for me. If the wall paper is still a current design (which it stands a good chance of being) and you still have it, it's worth a try!!!! Good luck
