To wonder if £10,000 can change your life?

Around 6 years ago when life was alot rosier my sister got married and my parents gave her and her partner and me and my partner £10,000 each. At the time I was on maternity leave and our mortgage was quite high, so the money came in handy, but apart from new windows, computer, settee and bed I can't think what we actually did with it. It has long since gone anyway.

Now things are a lot tighter I keep thinking about what I'd do if we had the chance again. This is an imaginery game, but can you actually turn 10k into something more? Start a business? Invest in stocks and shares? My best imaginery plan so far is to buy a static caravan so that we could ahve free holidays and rent it out for a bit of income. But I'm sure there must be better ideas out there. What would you do?

All sorts of things can take your life in a different direction ... so I reckon 10k could well be life-changing for many.

Who's handing it out ? Wink

We have just unexpectedly inherited this amount of money and I can't tell you how good it feels to wake up in the morning and not have to worry about debts every day. We have paid off debts , and have booked a holiday abroad next year rather than our usual Haven week and have a little set aside for emergencies. Money has been so tight for so long, that this amount feels life changing because for the first time in a long time I can realax a little .

that's good to hear babyroobs

I've spent that about that amount on house renovations this year (redundancy money) and I'm almost looking forward to winter to see how much difference it makes now the house is so much more weather proof. It mightn't be "give up my job and buy a yacht" life changing, but it can make a big big difference, that's for sure.

Pay off the car loan - £2400
Pay off the credit card - £950

Then I think we'd have a holiday...and put some aside for DD's uni fund which we've yet to start. She is only 6 months, though!...and DH wants a second car because we live in the middle of nowhere and it is difficult with just one...and perhaps we ought to save for a house deposit...and I want lots of new clothes...

Ten grand wouldn't do all of those things, but it would be a lovely dilemma to have. And paying off our debt would free up at least £250 a month.

That was my down payment on my first home so it was for me. Now it wouldn't be life-changing but it would mean I would worry less about putting DS through university (some way off - he's 5 :o)

Refurbish the house and have a holiday...

CumberdickBendybatch · 04/09/2012 01:45

Well, it would pay fees, stamp duty and costs for moving house (to a 3 bec semi, most likely).

It's all we would ike atm..

Morloth · 04/09/2012 07:38

I am in the very fortunate position where it wouldn't make much immediate difference to my life.

If I was suddenly given 10k, I would toss it on the mortgage without a second thought.

Because not having a mortgage will be life changing!

HSMM · 04/09/2012 08:21

It would be a massive help to me, but it would change my Mum's life if I gave it to her. It's shocking how little pensioners have to live on.

It would be a huge help in our house as we would be better off on a monthly basis if we paid our debts off. That's lovely babyroobs, I can imagine you feel alot 'lighter' with your debts paid. I like happy posts. Smile. However, if we were fine financially I would love to get my hair done, get an expensive coat, bag, shoes, jeans etc as I feel I haven't looked glam in ages. Sad
