Applying for a trainee editor job....Don't want them to think I'm a thicko (which I think I am, for not knowing this).

I think it's AN honest person....

An

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 03/09/2012 10:53

I think An too, but I'm guessing.

NotGeoffVader · 03/09/2012 10:53

an

Despite there being an h at the start of the word, it is silent, so 'an' must be used. (I think)

MissKeithLemon · 03/09/2012 10:53

Yup - its AN.

RuleBritannia · 03/09/2012 10:53

Any noun beginning with an aitch has 'an' as its indefinite article.

Honour
Hotel
Hill
etc

FalseStartered · 03/09/2012 10:54

it's an.. you use 'a' if the 'h' is sounded ie Hospital, Hotel, Hysteria

MissMogwi · 03/09/2012 10:54

I think it's 'an', otherwise it doesn't sound right does it.

Doubting self now.

MissMogwi · 03/09/2012 10:54

X post with whole world. Grin

RuleBritannia · 03/09/2012 10:55

My grandmother used to talk about staying at Anertel. I always wondered where it was.

ViviPru · 03/09/2012 10:55

Some tips.

Generally, 'an' is used when the H- word begins with a predominant vowel sound.

NeedAJobCheers · 03/09/2012 10:55

Ah...thanks everyone!

WhatYouLookingAt · 03/09/2012 11:18

in that instance I mean.

optional Literary styles are not a matter of law. A lot of great writers criticise each others style. Amis pater on son.

Nanny0gg · 03/09/2012 11:36

An.

RuleBritannia

You have now confused me...I am NOT an English native speaker and could swear that for hotel and hill 'A' would be appropriate

I would say I walked up A hill
I am sleeping in A hotel

I sound the letter 'h' out in those words, or am I now wrong?????

RunYouBastardRun · 03/09/2012 11:44

ViviPru has it right. If the first sould of the word is a vowel then you use 'an'. If the 'h' is pronounced then you use 'a'. 'Hotel' is an odd one as some people like my twat of an MIL say 'otel' because they believe it is the correct pronunciation and would use 'an'. If you say 'Hotel' like a normal person you use 'a'.

RunYouBastardRun · 03/09/2012 11:44

*sound

FalseStartered · 03/09/2012 11:44

world yes, that's it

if the 'h' is silent, you use 'an' - think of the 'n' replacing the silent 'h'

MrJasc · 03/09/2012 11:46

If the word begins with a vowel sound (such as honest, where the h is silent) then it's "an".

If the word begins with a consonant sound (such as "happy") then it's "a".

Exception: If the word begins with the /h/ sound and the stress is not on the first syllable (e.g. "historical", where the stress is on the "t"), then you may (as a matter of personal style) use "an", but you don't have to.

worldcitizen · 03/09/2012 11:47
