to complain re holiday accommodation...

We have just got back (last Wednesday) from a break in a luxury cottage in north Wales. It cost us £580 for 3 nights and 4 days and it slept 6 people. My parents and two children plus myself and husband.
Anyway the cottage was gorgeous and in a lovely location, However the twin bedroom where the two children slept was very damp and very smelly. The bedding in the morning felt damp/borderline wet and it smelt very strong of damp even when the windows were left open all day.
Am in right to want to complain after all £580 is not cheap and we paid a premium because it was luxury.
the smell was that potent that if our stay was any longer than 3 nights I would not have been happy for the kids to sleep in that room. I am also 34 weeks pregnant so not suitable for me to sleep in either.
I left a comment card but heard nothing yet, is following up with an email ok?

Definitely follow up email.
I wouldn't be happy about damp like you described
Could you not contact them whilst you were there?
I don't think you will get any money back though. I personally think you should !

Why did you wait until you were back home to think of complaining?

the father in law lived on site but the people we booked with and paid the money too live 120 miles away. we had no phone signals (3 different networks) and although it was supposed to have wifi the signal was very very poor and we couldn't connect to internet.
I doubt we will get any money back but I would hope they address it before letting it out again.

Follow up in writing, if there were any pics of the damp maybe the walls etc then add them in. However you should have contacted the owner when you were there and complained, he/ she could have brought heaters, alternative mattresses whilst you were there..I agree upheaval whilst you were there but it is always best to complain there and then.

I was just so desperate for a holiday that I didn't want to cause any problems while away. and when I mentioned to my mum the smell and how damp the kids bedding felt she suggested I complained. In hindsight I should have spoken to the father in law who lives on site. I left the comment card the day we left and thought someone would have emailed or phoned just to say sorry and we will sort it but heard nothing.
