To ask for a refund?

We booked a small local pool for DD's 5th birthday party from 10-11am.

We were at the pool as instructed at 9.50am. The guy with the key failed to turn up. In the end, I managed to find someone at another pool in the area, who knew someone with a key, to get them to find someone to come and open up the pool - which took until 10.30am.

Luckily, the pool is next to a park, so the birthday girl and her guests played there while we waited.

In the end we were in the water by 10.40am. The next booking wasn't until 11.30, so we just about got our hour but would I be unreasonable to ask for some kind of refund?

In the end things worked out ok, but it was a massive added stress.

I think it would be acceptable to ask for a partial refund in respect if the inconvenience. I would personally be happy with 50%, maybe ask for that and see what they say.

Yeah, I'd ask for some recompense, but 100% seems unlikely, as you did get your hour (ish)

Definitely not on- I'd think about the pool's financial position though. Is it like lots of local pools and facing closure? You MUST complain as it isn't good enough, but perhaps vouchers would be a better compensation as it would be more affordable for them.

I only say this as we have a lovely local pool that is always on the brink of closure- a refund like this would cripple them. They need every penny. This might not be the situation at all with you though.

Not unreasonable at all, you were lucky the weather was OK for going to the park. Yes, 50% would be worth trying for

Turkishdelight - actually vouchers might be a nice idea - they are part of a big chain and the booking cost £42, so unlikely to bankrupt them, but actually, it costs us a tenner for DD and I to go swimming usually, so we might get better value if they could offer us some free swims...
