Stuff about poor morale and staff retention?

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 02/09/2012 19:15

gaps in health and safety safeguards/reduction/reporting/audits?
more sickness leave, more accidents, stress and illnesses?

growingbytheday · 02/09/2012 19:19

poor service delivery (if in that field) duplication/wasted resources, lack of direction, lack of/poor career progression?

nananaps · 02/09/2012 19:23

Yeah great stuff.
I need to look at supportive evidence, but there is just SO much of it.
Its got to be based on current research & evidence.

Focussing on health care.
Its drowning me.

Effect on the team:

stress leading to higher blood pressure, ulcers, depression
unhappiness leading to people leaving jobs

Effect on the job being done

  • more chance of accidents due to stress, people not understanding instructions properly
  • deadlines not being met due to low morale and high absence rates
poor quality work being produced because staff don't understand procedures properly, they're nervous, make mistakes, panicking, rushing
  • claims against the company - unfair/constructive dismissal, bullying, harassment, then also poor quality products, don't meet legal requirements, cause damage to the consumer
WhatMakesYouSay · 02/09/2012 19:25

use Barclays as an example? poor leadership leading to unethical/criminal behaviour (Libor rigging) leading to huge fines

If you wanted to go a bit further back, then RBS is also good. Lots of stuff in newspapers like Telegraph/FT for details on where the leadership went wrong.

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 02/09/2012 19:26

high staff turnover, poor morale, lack of succession planning, short termism, lack of business planning, unclear direction/goals, poor service, poor customer feedback. lack of kpis/poor performance against them, no feedback asked for, lack of innovation, poor profitability, high absenteeism.

ImperialBlether · 02/09/2012 19:26

Try this.

WhatMakesYouSay · 02/09/2012 19:27

oops, x-posted with you.

If it has to be healthcare related, could you link it to the events at Mid-Staffs hospital?

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 02/09/2012 19:30

the opposite of this, basically
www.hse.gov.uk/stress/standards/

Lora1982 · 02/09/2012 19:34

could look at care homes. that one which was shut down for being awful to residents. most care homes have low staff and high staff turn over. (also far from academic)

nananaps · 02/09/2012 19:34

Mid staffs is a fab example.
I will have a quick look at that.

I have to do my part in a presentation next week, all the others seem to know what they are doing and are really enthusiastic. They seem so clued up.

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 02/09/2012 19:35

jkklpu · 02/09/2012 19:38

bullying atmosphere leading to persecution of whistleblowers and delays in resolving problems that put patients at risk (eg Bristol paediatric cardio unit)

duke748 · 02/09/2012 19:43

Break it down into chunks.

a) come up with an (interesting if possible) question that you will answer. This might have already been given to you. State how vitally important this field is (always do this, no matter what the topic is!) Maybe something about how expensive top management is and how there has been increasing evaluations of the effects of these people to see if they give value for money?

b) define any business terms you will discuss - so define leadership and define management. Be careful here - leadership and management are quite different concepts. So compare and contrast them - don't simply substitute one for the other though-out the essay.

You need stuff like "Smith (2012) defines management as '.....'. Jones (2011) goes further by stating that it is also '....'. However, Wilson (2012) disagrees and defines management as '....'

c) Find out who has written on the subject. There are usually 3 or 4 key texts that you are expected to refer to. Hopefully you have a list from your college/uni.

d) from these texts find a minimum of 3 consequences (how many depends on the length required) Find out as much as you can about these consequences.

You could split it into effects on staff and the company if you'd like.

You want to find out which authors agree, which disagree and which think it happens only in some circumstances/sectors.

You also want to find some examples, either real life examples you can apply what you have found to (Steve Jobs is always good for leadership) and/or cases/questionnaires quoted in texts.

Your own research (in the company you work for?) would also be great here, but I suspect you don't have enough time! Make sure you evaluate each consequence - don't just agree with all of them - good and bad about each one.

e) Conclude with your own evaluation. Consider everything you have put above but do come down on a 'side'. Something like "although there are many disadvantages of poor leadership, the author feels that it is blah that has the most impact."

f) Finally, make some kind of recommendation of how your work can be used/improved on Maybe further evaluation is required or staff opinion sought.

Hope that helps.

I hope that helps!

Aah that is fantastic.
See, when some one makes sense of it, and puts it into a logical sequence its so much easier.
I just get tied up in knots and overwhelmed by the volume of information out there.
Im going to print out your post duke748, its brilliant!
