To wonder why washing machines etc are downstairs?!

I've just come to the realisation that we take our clothes off upstairs. Why is the washing machine and tumble dryer downstairs?

Does anyone have them upstairs?
Think I might Actually put things away if it were upstairs.

So when they flood, the whole house isn't dripping with water? or perhaps they are by the back door so you don't have to lug laundry baskets down the stairs to peg out?

maristella · 02/09/2012 11:48

It would be really noisy having the washing machine on at night if it was near the bedrooms.

I think it's more to do with electricity and bathrooms

TeaBrick · 02/09/2012 11:48

It would be hard to get them upstairs?

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 02/09/2012 11:48

Well the washing line is downstairs if you have one, but yes, for the Winter it would be better to have them upstairs. I suppose many poeople don't have big bathrooms, which is where they'd need to go. Also, noise (I often put a load on overnight)

so, pros and cons really

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 02/09/2012 11:48

Because they are bloody heavy. And they are usually plumbed in somewhere near the kitchen sink?

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 02/09/2012 11:49

Of course maristella - that's a major consideration

MrsMiniversCharlady · 02/09/2012 11:49

Washing machine because it's easier for drainage and because they're very heavy so a pain to lug upstairs. In The Netherlands they're usually upstairs though.

Freddiebump · 02/09/2012 11:49

I live in an upside down house so my kitchen, and therefore washing machine, is upstairs, although that means I have the opposite problem of having to take washing down to put away! However, having it upstairs means I can't put it on early in the morning because it sounds like a jet plane taking off and the neighbours can hear it, or after ds has gone to bed else it wakes him up when it goes onto spin. Ditto the tumble drier. Which is a pain really seeing as I leave for work at 7.45am and don't get home til 6pm!

MerrilyWatkins · 02/09/2012 11:49

So that the whole house doesn't shake when it spins? I do my ironing upstairs though.

BlueMagoo · 02/09/2012 11:51

A friend of mine has always had a laundry-room upstairs, but she has the room for one.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 02/09/2012 11:53

I have a laundry room upstairs. Grin

CwtchesAndCuddles · 02/09/2012 11:55

I live in a bungalow - much easier!!

hippoCritt · 02/09/2012 11:56

What if it leaks or fails to drain? The noise would be much worse upstairs, we did contemplate having a futility room upstairs but talked ourselves out of it.

Snog · 02/09/2012 11:57

Ours is upstairs
It's annoying when you need a new one to carry one upstairs though.

RobotLover68 · 02/09/2012 11:58

I used to have mine upstairs in my old house - I bloody loved it! You're spot on - I used to take dirty clothes straight in there and wash them, dry them and put them away - my ironing board was in same room

shame I moved!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 02/09/2012 12:05

Those that have it upstairs - did you only use the rumble and never dry outside?

OP posts:
OptimisticPessimist · 02/09/2012 12:08

My tumble dryer is upstairs because there's no room in the kitchen - so I take dirty washing down to the washing machine, clean wet washing upstairs to dry it, clean dry washing back downstairs to fold it (usually on an evening while watching tv, keeps my hands busy so I don't eat instead!) and then upstairs to put it away. I'd LOVE an upstairs washing machine Grin

Caerlaverock · 02/09/2012 12:10

Ours is in the bathroom, having them in the kitchen is a bit Ming

whiskyfudge · 02/09/2012 12:10

Er, loads of people in this country live in flats btw.

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 02/09/2012 12:12

whisky Yes, that's true. In which case this particular issue wouldn't apply. Unless it's a maisonette

RobotLover68 · 02/09/2012 12:17

Jazz I only use the "rumble" anyway I don't have a line

JazzAnnNonMouse · 02/09/2012 13:05

Yes lots of people live in flats... I wasn't talking about them though...

our is upstair, on the top floor of a three story house in a laundry room. i use the tumble drier about 4 times a year when there is snow. Other that that hang things on driers updtairs which is warner than downstairs because heat rises. Don't have it on when in bed, and don't notice it. It's much more convenient than having it in the kitchen. have never had a washing machine in a kitchen i think that's very odd as kitchens are for cooking in!

LizzieMint73 · 02/09/2012 17:25

I noticed in an ikea catalogue a few years ago they had a bathroom with a washer and dryer in, presumably upstairs. it would make sense if you live in a rainy/cold country like Sweden to have it all upstairs as you wouldn't be pegging out very often but if you like to line dry as much as possible it might be just as easy to have it downstairs. can't imagine getting a washer up our steep narrow stairs although it would free up some room in our ridiculously small kitchen
