to travel with Ryanair? To have DD miss days of school?

HappyHippie · 02/09/2012 00:16

I'm trying to book the flight to see my family in half term, but prices vary a lot from one day to the next one. Also, Ryanair is much, much cheaper, than other airlines, but well... we all know Ryanair, don't we? The other option is Easyjet, but even they are much more expensive in those dates.

So, 2 AIBU questions...

  • Do you think it's OK for a 5 year old to miss 2 days of school right before the holidays? Should I ask for permission or just go ahead and book the flights?
  • Does anyone have anything nice to say about Ryanair? Hmm

I would check with the school first to get the dates authorised. I can't see two days being a problem, not traveled with Ryan air so can't comment really :)

theodorakis · 05/09/2012 11:17

Whatyoulookingat, nice patronising and rude sarcasm but actually happens to be true so bog off and learn some manners.

WhatYouLookingAt · 05/09/2012 11:59

I have manners, thanks. But its not true, really, is it? Check in 3 mins before take off...how did you get through security and to the gate in 3 minutes (especially when 3 minutes before take off the doors to the plane would already be closed)? Its not physically possible.

Floggingmolly · 05/09/2012 12:07

No and no.

theodorakis · 05/09/2012 12:22

We didn't go through security, just from the crappy desk at T3 straight onto the plane. The plane had started to taxi before we had even sat down in our seats. Why you think I would want to lie about something is utterly beyond me. I don't need to cyber impress anyone, let alone people who think Ryanair is an airline.

However, if you would like to check, I am happy to provide you with the date, flight number and time of the LHR to Doha Qatar Airways flight and you can check with the airline. So yes, it is true and please don't call me a liar.

theodorakis · 05/09/2012 12:23

Maybe big airlines are a bit different to the ones you have been on.

AllPastYears · 05/09/2012 12:24

On the Ryanair front, have you seen this?

her fault for using them in the first place. He's right she is an idiot. He is an arrogant little prick.

mayorquimby · 05/09/2012 13:21

She is an idiot, and I love her for it. It's gobdhites like her not following the rules who are subsidising the rest of us who somehow manage to accomplish the amazing feat of reading the t&c's and not over packing.

mayorquimby · 05/09/2012 13:22

I love Michael o'leary. Absolute class act

WhatYouLookingAt · 05/09/2012 18:00

I hope you are lying about not going through security. Otherwise we're all fucked if they let people on planes without security while the rest of us are strpisearched and have conditioner confiscated Hmm

Ryanair is an airline. What do you think it is, a chain of sandwich shops?

oh and please do provide me with those details so I can inform the relevant authorities of the massive breach in security. Ta. Smile

Hulababy · 05/09/2012 19:25

Was the whole 3 minute thing a transfer from one plane to another?

Otherwise - how come no security? That would be a massive breach of security!

And whenever I use Heathrow there is a fair walk to the gates - most are a good 15/20 minutes after going through security.

WhatYouLookingAt · 05/09/2012 19:26

you don't need to check in if its a transfer.

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 05/09/2012 20:09

Our school used to allow 10 days holiday inside of term dates but now they have a 'zero tolerance policy' and they fine parents £50 per child from each parent per day (which would quickly wipe out a fair bit of any term time savings). They have even refused time off for family funerals and for the wedding of a child's parents!

Hulababy · 05/09/2012 20:12

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour - I thought there was an upper limit to the amount you can be fined. Also, it is still at the discretion of the head teacher, not the LEA.

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 05/09/2012 20:27

Hula, yes the school decided on the policy and instead of taking into account exceptional circumstances they have just decided on a blanket ban, the head teacher has a standard letter he sends out regardless of the reason for the request

I'm sure you're right about the limit on the amount of fines, otherwise it could become ridiculous couldn't it?! The most I have known someone fined since they changed the policy was £200 all together but I'm not sure if there have been any higher fines?

I'm afraid in my schools case, rightly or wrongly people are just starting to lie now rather than be fined somim or sure how much the change in policy is helping with attendance rates

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 05/09/2012 20:29

I have no idea if the gobbledygook in my post was down to my iPad or my morphine, sorry Grin

theodorakis · 07/09/2012 06:01

No not a transfer, no security at all. Why the fuckinghell would I want to lie to a bunch of random computer people? And obviously we complained, they blamed it on building work meaning they only had one check in desk for 2 full flights.

theodorakis · 07/09/2012 06:04

I were a liar I would namechange regularly and i don't. I don't know why it irritates me so much, I think it is the patronising tone suggesting I don't know what I am talking about. I fly at least once a month and long haul at least 6 times a year. I admit the reason I fly once a month to Dubai is to go to Waitrose but it is still flying.

WhatYouLookingAt · 07/09/2012 07:41

do you think that its maybe that what you are saying goes against about 300 laws and regulations that would be massive news and get lots of people and companies both fined and fired?
Allowing people onto a plane without any security checks whatsoever would be worldwide headline news.

theodorakis · 07/09/2012 08:31

Yes I'm lying. either that ir i am so thick I don't remember it right. Lucky clever people on a gossip internet forum are there to catch me out and aprehend me. Go to hell clever clogs.

theodorakis · 07/09/2012 08:34

I am going to hide this now so goodbye and fuck off.

itsjustmeanon · 07/09/2012 08:35
  • I think at 5 yo it's fine to miss two days school.
  • I love Ryanair, if you get the baggage all correct, in measurements and weight, and the tickets printed off, I think they're super. Never had a late flight with them. Just got back from Italy with them, both flights on time, we just had one checked in suitcase and the rest was hand luggage.
