AIBU to think that double yellow lines on the road does not mean please use the pavement as your own personal parking space

...so that pedestrians and people with young children and prams have to walk on the road just so you can enjoy a nice convenient parking space! So selfish.

Oh this drives me mad. YANBU.

Tiredmumno1 · 01/09/2012 21:47

YANBU I know exactly how you feel, those responsible are just selfish

threesocksmorgan · 01/09/2012 21:48

YANBU
I HATE THIS

FakePlasticLobsters · 01/09/2012 21:51

We have had this problem on our street (we live by a school and it's all going to start again next week) and in discussions with the Safer Neighbourhood team they told us that the yellow lines on the road include the pavement or grass at the other side of them.

So parking with two wheels on the kerb or grass, or all four on the pavement, still equates to parking on the double yellows and can be enforced in the same way.

Mind you, the parents dropping off and collecting around here think nothing of actually driving a fair way along the pavement if the roads are at a standstill, so I doubt they would stop parking like that even if they knew it was the same as parking on the lines.

YANBU OP.

YouOldSlag · 01/09/2012 21:55

That's interesting FakePlasticlobsters. I had a feeling it was illegal but I guess people think if there's no traffic warden and no police around they may as well indulge their selfish bastard parking impulses. Grrr

I'd love to go round grassing them up, especially when they do it on junctions so me and the DCs have to walk blindly round a corner hoping there's nothing coming.

You could always try posting on fixmystreet.com. They send a report to the council, you can post anonymously if you wish (although you have to provide your email address to the website) and include a photo.

They then contact the council and ask them to act on the issues being raised.

But the warden told us (residents all received a letter and there was a thing in the local paper, people who complained received phone calls or even visits) that the yellow lines include everything at the other side of them, pavement, grass, whatever, the yellow lines mean no parking on it. We've had an increase of wardens patrolling as well as police and community officers walking around and speaking to people parking or driving badly.

They take details the first time and repeat offenders have been given fines. It has helped, but this month we'll have a new group of first year of students arriving and it will start again with their parents parking badly and driving along the pavement.

Rhubarb78 · 01/09/2012 22:04

YANBU, I thought double yellows meant park here all you like as long as you have your hazzards on Grin it does round here anyway

YouOldSlag · 01/09/2012 22:25

Thanks Lobsters, that's very useful.

Rhubarb-yes, some drivers do think it means that! Uber twats!

OP posts:
AmIthatbad · 02/09/2012 02:24

Yes Rhubarb, I agree. And when DD was at primary school, it meant free parking for ignorant arsehole parents, who were only interested in their own child, not the 300 others who couldn't get past their cars on the pavement.

It was even better when they opened the doors to strap their darlings in.

sashh · 02/09/2012 09:33

Where are you OP? A few of us on here have blue badges, we could all park at the side so the driver cannot get back on the road. It would be a laugh, we could have cake and coffee.

RuleBritannia · 02/09/2012 09:40

Good idea, Sashh!

I have sticky labels that I produced on my computer that say something like "Pavements are for pedestrians. Please park elsewhere". I stick them onto their offside mirrors so they cannot miss them. I make sure no one is watching while I do it though. I did it once when an unrecognised car was parked on the pavement right by our house. Unfortunately, it was a new car bought by a next door neghbour with whom we get along well. He took it in good part though.

TraineeBabyCatcher · 02/09/2012 09:53

If it wasnt for the fact its parents of school kids that were the problem, i'd suggest these youparklikeacunt.com/post/26575683828/well-yplac-fans-its-time-to-unveil-those

YouOldSlag · 02/09/2012 10:00

sash, I'm in Wales. I like your style!

Rulebritiannia- I might start doing that too.

Is it wrong that the misdemeanours of others turn me into the local prefect?

School run offenders are the worst. Where I used to live, this woman just parked at the turn of a downhill blind corner. I had a pushchair at the time and tapped on her window. She started right ahead as if I wasn't there. Soooo rude.

Never mind, DS1 and took a chance on getting run over and happened to be lucky that time, no thanks to the selfish cow pretending she couldn't see me.

Take photos. Upload to the You Park Like A Cunt Facebook group. Leave notes advising that you have done so. Grin

YouOldSlag · 02/09/2012 13:12

Well I like that idea Welsh!

Tiredmumno1 · 02/09/2012 13:20

I love that site welsh, I am thinking of putting a photo on there of a car that is currently parked with his car sticking over my neighbours drive, which is making it difficult for her to get on and off, people really just don't give a damn Angry

WelshMaenad · 02/09/2012 13:26

I'm in Wales too, and I gave a blue badge, so if you want me to cone block em in after you've taken a pic just yell Grin

Tiredmumno1 · 02/09/2012 13:31

That's a shame welsh, you are no where near me, but that would be pretty funny to see Grin

PigletJohn · 02/09/2012 13:57

I believe the rule is that if they are parked on the pavement, you are allowed tp push past, preferably with shopping bags, a pram, or a wheelchair. Obviously you are allowed to bend their mirrors out of the way.

If you are a blind person with a stick, you are allowed to hit it with your stick while trying to find your way past.

NorbertDentressangle · 02/09/2012 14:09

Grin Rhubarb - around here double yellows seem to mean its OK to park there, (half on the road/half on pavement or verge) providing you are driving a huge, gleaming, 4x4/SUV type vehicle.

There is also a little known by-law here that states that if it is a BMW or Volvo SUV (Socially Unacceptable Vehicle) then you can also block the entrance to any driveway or small side road.

Tiredmumno1 · 02/09/2012 14:28

Norbert that actually made me Grin as its a BMW that's blocking my neighbours drive Grin
