to think X Factor exploitation and humiliation has reached a new low

So tonight on the X Factor there was a woman in her 50s humiliating herself - likening herself to Madonna and murdering a Lady Gaga song

OK, fair dos, she's put herself up for it, anyone entering the competition could be setting themselves up for ridicule - it's been the format of the audition shows from day one.

That aside, I am horrified at the decision by whatever producer was responsible to film her 2 teenage children in the wings and to make entertainment out of their crippling mortification. The woman's daughter looked like she was about to burst into tears.

I would bet anything that they are going to be getting a shit time at school next week - and who knows for how long :(. I think the show has crossed a line here and there is absolutely no justification for humiliating children for the sake of entertainment Angry

It was wrong to use the kids like this in the name of entertainment. However I reserve my harshest judgement for the mother. She made the decision to drag her kids along. It was also fairly obvious that she enjoys making an exhibition of herself, so whether she'd got on x factor or not, you can bet those poor kids have to put up with an awful lot of embarrassment from her a home already. I somehow doubt their school friends all thought she was mrs normal up until now.

Sallyingforth · 02/09/2012 11:58

If this sort of ritual humiliation was done in a school there would be hell to pay.

But because it's on TV in front of millions it's OK?

Barbielovesken · 02/09/2012 12:22

Actually came on to post something similar op - my heart really, really sank for those children and I can't stop thinking about them this morning.

Yes, the mother was a horrible, selfish disgrace to so that to them but she has obviously something wrong with her. I'm disgusted at the producers for airing this particular act. I won't be watching again because of it- I'll also be complaining to OFCOM, if anyone feels the same as I do I'd ask you to please do the same..

FrothyOM · 02/09/2012 14:58

YANBU They should not have shown the kids.

Birdsgottafly · 02/09/2012 15:10

That wouldn't have been the first audition, so the producers set those children up, which is very wrong.

My DD (16) and her friends immediately started posting on fb, how bad it was and positive messages for the girl.

Tulisa has gone up in my estimation.

I think X factor is good for the way that it discovers people and doesn't need to go to these lows.

LineRunner · 02/09/2012 16:19

Happy to complain to Ofcom.

NarkedRaspberry · 02/09/2012 16:42

That's a major part of what the X Factor is - people put through auditions by producers to audition in front of the panel because they have no ability. Humiliation as entertainment. Vile programme.

melonandpapayaandmango · 02/09/2012 17:23

I used to really dislike Tulisa, but I've definitely softened to her after that.

That poor girl - both children seemed lovely Sad

SwedishEdith · 02/09/2012 17:53

I've complained to Ofcom. Never have before.

valiumredhead · 02/09/2012 17:56

Those poor kids - we said the same, the girl in particular was mortified. Can you imagine the stick they will get when they go back to school? Sad

madhairday · 02/09/2012 19:30

We won't be watching it again in this house.
Just horrible. :(

Nellster · 02/09/2012 22:21

I caught this audition last night too. That children's public humiliation has been used as entertainment has been bothering me all day. I've just complained to OFCOM and again would urge others to do the same.

LineRunner · 02/09/2012 22:42

I've complained to Ofcom.

Their site won't let me use apostrophes. WTF?

arthurfowlersallotment · 02/09/2012 22:45

I HATE the x-factor. That includes the judges and the thick, slack jawed, cheap mascara laden cunting audience.

FairLadyRantALot · 02/09/2012 22:49

why are you watching it than?
Because recent years of humiliating shows have taught us that this is going to happen ...and still people watch and belittle or feel sorry.... don't watch them type of shows and they will vanish.... vote with your feet... don't watch unless a better system is in place where these type of incidents don't happen

GhostShip · 02/09/2012 22:50

That's already been said and a few of us have already said we're no longer going to watch it ^

FairLadyRantALot · 02/09/2012 22:54

still OP is still watching it, lol.... and than moaning

arthurfowlersallotment · 02/09/2012 22:56

I don't watch it, but it's ubiquitous shit

RagingDull · 02/09/2012 22:57

i lost interest in xfactor long long ago but unfortunately it was on at work - i inwardly cringed for those poor poor children.

bastards the lot of em and im glad i dont watch this shit anymore.

NarkedRaspberry · 02/09/2012 23:04

It's always been banned in my house.

MyBaby1day · 03/09/2012 08:51

I agree with you, her poor children. Silly selfish woman!. Her children were humiliated and it was dreadful!.

fatlazymummy · 03/09/2012 09:01

I haven't watched x factor for years. This is just one of many reasons.
I have heard that ratings are down, hopefully it soon dies a natural death.

Servalan · 03/09/2012 22:06

Nah FairLady - not still watching after moaning Smile - switched off straight after seeing that and don't plan to turn it back on. Also complained to Ofcom. (Will agree that I probably shouldn't have been watching such shite in the first place though Blush)

I was thinking of posting this after I saw it but didn't get round to it. Op- I completely agree with you. I was horrified that the show decided to broadcast those two humiliated children and their mother. They could see how worried the children were about the potential embarrassment. I thought it was really unfair.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 03/09/2012 22:55

I agree, normally we skip the auditions and just watch the live showsn because the set-up of bad singers is unpleasant, but it was so far over the line to focus on the kids.

Won't be watching any of it ever again.
