making injury claims

I have just seen a comment on facebook from an aquaintance. She is in A&E with her 2 daughters as someone has just crashed into the side of her. She said all are absolutely fine but need checked out (kids are 4 and 6.5). It has astounded me that everyone is shouting 'claim, claim, claim' to her and she is agreeing. A few people have even said to get the kids to act injured. I am absoltutely disgusted. I have no problem with claims if they are genuine but she is clearly fine from her comments. AIBU to make a comment about false claims? (while obviously expressing concern for her well being!!).

As for posting while in hospital...grrrr!

They are probably joking.

And why not post in hospital, do you want her to spend the many hours waiting around just staring at the walls?

alphabite · 01/09/2012 17:25

They certainly don't sound like they are joking and this person has 'form' for this sort of thing.

As for posting in hospital - her children might need her more than facebook does. Her choice though.

I would post in A&e

I crashed into a very nice older gentleman and said 'sorry, my fault!'

He claimed to fix his car through my insurance and all was well

My car insurance has gone down!

I liked him

I crashed my car about 9 years earlier and got sued for loss of earnings and whiplash by an unemployed person Hmm who had been round to ours that night totally fine drinking tea! I was 17 Angry

Someone I know is claiming whiplash from a small bump. It doesnt seem to have stopped him working in his garden all weekend with no obvious ill effects.
He's also openly said the payout will pay for his next holiday.
I have to say that I strongly suspect he is exaggerating this injury,

axure · 01/09/2012 17:34

they need checked out are you in NI? just guessing cos of your language, and the fact that it's claims capital of the UK, my DH and DS have both been in car accidents in last 12 months, neither claimed and everybody kept saying that they were mad, it would pay for a holiday etc. No wonder our car insurance is so bloody expensive here Angry

alphabite · 01/09/2012 17:40

No I'm not in NI axure. North East England.

I am probably being unreasonable but I hate claiming when there is no genuine need to. If someone suffered lots of pain or loss of earnings then obviously claim but not because it spoilt your day.

I don't think YABU at all. It pisses me off. Fine, if they have suffered a loss, but just to try and get some buckshee cash, it is not on, imho. And I bet that the people posting weren't joking.

Kayano · 01/09/2012 17:48

Ha! Me too. I know loads of people who have claimed for whiplash up here in the north east. Think everyone is sadly of the 'why not give it a go' mindset

alphabite · 01/09/2012 17:51

Thanks.

Years ago I ran into the back of someone so ahrd it broke their number plate light, that was all , no visible damage. We swapped details as you should but I thought no more of it.

I was shocked when I found out that the total cost of their claim was £17,000!! this was for damage, injury and legal fees.

alphabite · 01/09/2012 17:53

madness balotelli. £17,000 for a broken light! Absolutely laughable. I am sure they enjoyed their cruise.

I have a friend who was off work for weeks after a bus went into the back of her car. It was clear that many people thought she was trying it on yet she was genuine. It's the attitute of people like you friend op that makes it hard for everyone so YNBU.
Plusof course we all end up paying in our car insurance premiums for these false claims.

alphabite · 01/09/2012 18:18

Ouch horsey. A bus. Now that is an honest claim. Poor thing.

Completely agree that it ups our premiums. No wonder it's so hard to get cheap insurance, even when I have 8 years no claims.
