How long without food and water (dd aged 7)

DD bit her tongue really badly ysterday, i posted in children health already, she has not eaten since 2pm yesterday and only accepted the smallest sips of water, but i would say that she hasn't had 100ml of liquid over the past 24 hours. I'm not worried about her eating, that will come but she wont take any drink and she MUST be dehydrated by now. Have been to hospital about the tongue yesterday and she was given paracetemol/ibruprofen and advised to let it heal. Am thinking that she maybe just needs another nights sleep for things to heal more but is that OK? would you be pitching up at the hospital yet?

healing, not heeling!

Try some diarlyte. It's what you give to children/ adults who are sick/ diarreea to replace lost salts etc but doctor told us a few months back to give also when not drinking much as rehydrates a lot quicker.

You can make a sacket up and syringe every 10 mins or so ( I think need to use each made solution within hour)- tastes blackcurrent ish. Available in boots

thanks forever, i think i have two chances with that - fat chance and no chance :) that stuff is vile and DD wont even have stuff she likes, she is now voluntarily having some sips of water now though so i think we are on the mend. Its just that whole dilemma of decidin whether its A&E today rather than leaving it all day and going later on when they will be manic busy. I will defo make an appointment with her GP tomorrow. Why do these things always happen at the weekend? :(

Haha, maybe you could make some and add a little with something else ( so 10/20% diarlyte solution mixed with ribena?

Also remember that fruits an veggies and other things even yogurts and ice cream are liquid based. Maybe not for today but over the next few days.

Yogurt good if can convince as the natural bacteria in will help with heeling also and should go down easily. Plus calorific

With baby ( 9 months I think at time) a few months ago the doc was happy for him to be going 48 hrs on low liquid intake ( was formula though so basically food) before he would want to admit for drip ( but baby prob earlier so maybe 3 days for elder child if still on some
Liquids)

Like I said we did diarlyte on advice ( prob two a day- 10 ml every 10 mins as under 2)

Hope she's feeling better

Still no food :( she has been brighter today and we took her to crazy golf. She had a teaspoon of soup earlier on but nothing since, the heart rending thing is the poor little might just tried to eat some mash potato (i dished her a dinner up with ours and tried to be matter of fact) and just cried because she couldn't do it. DP is now trying to feed her some fromage frais but she really isn't having any of it. She IS drinking though.

Jelly cut small? She could just swallow it??

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2012 04:39

My DD didn't eat a bite for over 2 weeks when ill once (she got very skinny but ate loads when better) and GP was not concerned at all. I wouldn't take her to A and E or really worry about no food For a few days, it's liquid that's important. She will heal soon and eat loads :)

Iteotwawki · 03/09/2012 05:36

Don't worry about food. She can go without for a while as long as you're getting sugary drinks / squashes / milk into her.

As far as fluids go, it depends on her weight. A "typical" 7 year old should weigh around 22-25kg.

She needs 4ml/kg/hr for the first 10kg, 2ml/kg/hr for the second 10, then 1ml/kg/hr for the rest.

So if she's on the lighter end - say, 22kg - she needs 62ml/hr or about 1.4L over a day.

If she's a bit dry she'll need an extra bit to rehydrate her (normally 20ml/kg so around 450ml).

Drinking a bit less than that won't be a massive problem but that should give you an idea of the ballpark to aim for.

(it's how I work out IV maintenance fluids in children and I strongly second the suggestion of 5ml in a medicine syringe every 5 mins - it gives around 60ml an hour and it has kept my boys out of hospital with dehydration from illness more than once!)

I am with the force it down people much nicer than the alternative. I have spent many an hour chasing DS around the hospital playroom with a syringe of fluids to avoid ending up on IVs

Don't worry about food at all Ds has gone a week without eating anything before now

Glad she is a little brighter.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2012 17:52

How is she now?

Lucyellensmum100 · 03/09/2012 19:31

Took her to the doc this morning, who said she MUST drink today, and thank GOD, she has done :) It cost us £14 in bribery but she has drunk about three quarters of a litre so far! Shes talking thanks to an afternoon on the beach with her "boyfriend" Still no food but shes talking the hind leg off a donkey again - im a happy mummy again.
