To think that taking away online banking is a stupid idea?

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 01/09/2012 11:46

Specifically for ds's savings accounts. I can no longer see them or manage them on my online banking page. Apparently I will have to go to branch to do this, which is really inconvenient and a complete PITA.

Online banking is the future, so why are they going backwards?

Who is taking away online banking?

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 01/09/2012 11:47

Halifax children's savings accounts can no longer be applied for or managed online.

YANBU - seems v strange to do that & also v annoying. I'd switch banks tbh.

toysoldiers · 01/09/2012 11:49

They normally do it if they want to discourage people from having the account but can't legitimately close them down.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/09/2012 11:49

I'd switch too, that is fecking ridiculous, especially as it saves them money too.

Athendof · 01/09/2012 11:51

Sadly, there is no better interest fain in a child account as the halifax one... I would be annoyed but I would keep it.

Athendof · 01/09/2012 11:52

Gain, not fain. Sorry

Thumbwitch · 01/09/2012 11:53

Have they said why? Is it an anti-fraud thing?

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 01/09/2012 11:54

Yes it's the interest that's keeping me there. I feel like taking ds with me when I go to branch, when he's especially grouchy just to prove my point about why I prefer online banking.

OP posts:
TheHeirOfSlytherin · 01/09/2012 11:56

They didn't say why but I will ask when I am forced to go to branch to sort his accounts out. I asked what would happen as I have paperless statements and was told I would be sent a statement each year, which I also do not want - which is why I chose to go paperless in the first place!

Lloyds TSB are the same with their kids savings account. It is a pain in the arse but I don't need it for mine really.

onedev · 01/09/2012 12:06

Toysoldiers can you elaborate? Why would they not want people to have the account?

Glitterkitten24 · 01/09/2012 12:12

It's bloody annoying!

All our bank accounts are with Halifax, but the child saver account is a really poor service. Can't see it online, the cashiers can't print you a statement in branch, you don't get a 'bank book' or a card (obviously) so need to keep a note of the account number stored in my phone.

Worse, only one adult can 'administer' the account on behalf of the child so since my DH set the account up, the staff in branch can not talk to me about the account at all.

It does have the best interest rate but is a really shoddy product.

AmIthatbad · 01/09/2012 12:15

I have a Children's Saver with them for DD and I hadn't heard about this either.

I do all my banking online and wouldn't be happy about having to go into the branch and put money in her account every month, when at the moment, it takes seconds for me to do it at home.

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 01/09/2012 12:34

I didn't hear about it until I called up to ask why it had gone missing! His regular saver has just matured and suddenly the entire account and it's contents weren't there.

I didn't know that only one parent could administer the account. I really don't like that. I think I my branch visit may be to close ds's savings accounts down now.

hedwig2001 · 01/09/2012 12:42

I have no savings, so DS's money is in my ISA at Halifax. Have internet access to it. Pays 3%.

toysoldiers · 01/09/2012 12:46

I may be overly cynical but ......

They launch a great account which has fantastic interest rate, making them look good in adverts and appear in top tables etc. but they don't want huge numbers of people opening or using the account because the interest rate is good so it will therefore cost them lots of money.

So they make it as awkward as possible to run the account. They still get to have the best looking children's account without paying squillions in interest.

WishICouldBeLikeDavidWicks · 01/09/2012 13:09

Yes I noticed this when I logged in and rang up for them to explain this nonsense. They asked if I'd like to file a compaint, so I did, natch.

The only record I'll have of one child's account is this annual paper statement as there's no passbook or online details.

I went into branch and moaned about it being backward too. I'd gone in as one child had been paying tax. I've filled in the tax form to get that 0.98p back. It's the principal!

Fireytiger · 01/09/2012 13:37

I am in the same position with two accounts for my children. When I went in to branch they explained that they are merging their systems with the bank that took them over - Lloyds I think.

The accounts will be coming back online, they just don't know when yet.

Be patient - surely it is worth it for the interest.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 01/09/2012 13:42

the children's accounts wont show on your online banking because it is not your account and is in the name of the child. You may be the named parent but it isn't your account so you have to deal with it in branch rather than see online.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 01/09/2012 13:45

you can still pay money into the account online so dont need to visit the branch to transfer funds from your own account to their account - you just cant access the account on your online banking because it is not your account

AmIthatbad · 01/09/2012 13:51

Confused I have two showing. a Save4it for DD and a Saver Reward for DS (which hasn't been touched for years)

Although the accounts belong to them , they have "Ttee MissAmI" and "Ttee MrAmI".

They are on my accounts page and I can move money in and out

onedev · 01/09/2012 16:49

Thanks Toy, that makes sense & wouldn't surprise me actually.
