To dump the bags on their doorstep?

The next door neighbours are away on holiday and while they're going they have her brother staying to house sit. Bin day was on Wednesday and when I went to bring it back in from the end of the drive, I noticed that he hadn't put their bin out and it was full to the point of overflowing.

As I went to move our bin, I realised it wasn't empty but pulled it back anyway, and figured I'd call the council to complain. However, when I opened the bin to pop another sack of rubbish in, I realised that it was half full of NEXT DOOR'S RUBBISH. The cheeky fucker, upon realising he had missed the binmen and presumably with a large amount of rubbish to dispose of, decided he'd just throw it in our bin rather than put it in the back of his car and drive to the local tip.

So, now I have a half full bin that will not be emptied for another fortnight. Should I dump the rubbish back on the next door neighbour's step for him to deal with (to join the two or three bags he's also dumped there and that will no doubt start attracting rats etc)? Or should I wait until NDNs return and ask them in future to tell her lazy arse brother to keep his bin bags to himself? Or should I seethe silently for a while and let it go?

face them, nicely, surely they are capable of taking it to tip. or getting him to. but no, it is not fair to put it in your bin.

Iheardthatpardon · 31/08/2012 15:10

If you don't want a confrontation, you can call the council and tell them your bins have not been emptied properly and they will send a truck round to collect it.

ErikNorseman · 31/08/2012 15:14

Just go and explain. It's not your rubbish and it can't stay in your bin.

Aside from anything else if there are letters with their name and address on then they are at risk of identity theft. I would go around, smile nicely and say "terribly sorry - I think your brother must have filled my bin up by mistake as it is half full of rubbish that isn't ours and there are letters with your name and address on. Would you rather come and empty it so tha you can shreds the letters or shallI just put some of ours in your bin when we run out of space,"

Very tactful mummytokatie. Probably the best approach.

Some neighbour once stole my wheelie bin. I found it on the pavement several houses down the road filled with what can only have been bin bags of wet cement, or possibly lead. The bin men had obviously not emptied it because it was too heavy. I took the bags out (with great difficulty), left them leaning against the fence and triumphantly wheeled my empty bin back to my house.

Update: Lovely lovely NDN just knocked on the door looking incredibly apologetic and went into lengthy rant about her 'stupid, lazy, feckless brother'. Turns out he had told her about his clever scheme of getting rid of some of their binbags and she was very, very unimpressed.

Said bags have been removed by her DH and are en route to the tip as we speak.

Yay! Now, if you wouldn't mind popping over to solve the Great Christmas Takeaway mystery, or, also, who STOLE our garden waste wheelie bin, I'd be terribly grateful! Grin

Just checking threads I'm on, and saw this, hurray for sensible lovely next door neighbour lady!!

GiserableMitt · 01/09/2012 18:41

And how lovely that she got in first Grin

Oh that is good of your neighbour...I wouldn't of wanted someone else rubbish in my bin especially if it was four week old takeaways... which it would be by the time of the next collection.

We rarely fill our bin, unless we are having a clear out. I dont understand not using the food bin...ours is collected weekly....if we chucked food waste in the landfill bin it would be two week old food, and I have a deep aversion to m@&&*ts. We have lockable outside food bin and a sealed caddy for the kitchen but I freeze it anyhow

The person with not enough room and two in nappies.....how much of that rubbish is poo ? do you just wrap up the nappy complete ?

bruschetta · 01/09/2012 20:59

I would send DH round there to put him straight. Do you want him to do that for you? He's very good.
