My friend hasn't been on holiday for 18 years and I haven't had a proper holiday for about 14 years Sad

dh is a bit of a stick in the mud and doesn't like going away Hmm I've suggested that we go away sometime and he agrees, but nothing ever happens and he would probably just moan anyway Shock

WIBU for me and my friend to have a proper holiday? Grin

We would like to go to Italy, but aren't sure how much we'd need to save for this. We like to see different stuff and not just sit around reading all day.

Ooo, wouldn't have ever thought of going to Croatia.

Grin at Hullygully If I go away it will deny him valuable captive moaning time though Grin

Yes of course it's completely possible to get ripped off in places like Rome and Venice! Having been to Rome twice a year for the last ten years and Venice 6 times in that period I have experienced all possible combinations of getting ripped off and not getting ripped off! I have sat in Piazza S Marco and paid ?8 for coffee and in a square round the back and paid ?2. Both were worth it in different ways! Pompeii is - ummmm - interesting for about the first 11 minutes until you realise how vast it is, how many zillion other people are there and how much it all looks a bit the same. Rather like Stonehenge. I'd say Sorrento would be a good choice. I'd love to go to Croatia someday - go there and tell us what it's like!

It's right across the Adriatic sea from Italy, so the food is pretty similar - and oh my, the seafood! I vaguely remember visiting a massive amphitheatre, a couple of Byzantine cathedrals, and an island town filled with terracotta roofed houses lining winding hilly roads. Lovely.

The hotel was awful though. Filled with loads of very grumpy German families.
