To hate it when people say "it makes my teeth itch"?

Just that really....

It's made worse because they always say it when they're going on about how awful something else sounds...and I am always left thinking...yes, it's annoying, but not nearly as annoying as you saying it makes your teeth itch!!!

YANBU

It makes my teeth itch

AnnoyingOrange · 30/08/2012 22:28

I loathe it too

Morph2 · 30/08/2012 23:24

i've never ever heard anyone say that and i'm 39 this year. Is it a regional thing, where do you live?

NameChangeGalore · 30/08/2012 23:28

The first time I ever heard anyone say it was when that new woman on Dragon's Den said it to a pitcher.

How can your teeth itch? I don't get it.

Morph2 · 30/08/2012 23:33

you could have itchy gums but not teeth, don't get it.

What do they actually mean??

LizzieVereker · 30/08/2012 23:39

I think they mean the reaction you have to a "nails down a blackboard" sound, like a shiver down you spine. It does make your teeth feel a bit weird. I hate it when people say "nom nom" instead of "yum". For some reason that phrase makes me feel sick and irrationally irritated.

EllenParsons · 30/08/2012 23:42

Yanbu, I hate it. Never heard it in real life but people are always saying it on here. Horrible turn of phrase!

Mymooncuprunnethover · 31/08/2012 13:51

I live in the north, Morph, but I've never heard anyone say it in real life.

It's all over MN, though!!!

I think Hilary on Dragon's Den says "you make my foot itch," which is also odd, but at least is possible...

cardibach · 31/08/2012 14:44

I'm with Lizzie about 'nom, nom'. Absolutely can't stand it. 'Yum' isn;t much better, either.
Itchy teeth are just incomprehensible.

mistressploppy · 31/08/2012 14:47

YANBU, I hadn't heard this phrase before joining mumsnet. It's irritating (ironically) but I don't know why

IslaValargeone · 31/08/2012 14:48

Please tell me that nobody actually says 'nom, nom'?
My God, if anyone said that to me, I would have to strangle them there and then.

drjohnsonscat · 31/08/2012 15:00

Yes I hate it too. I think it's something about the way people use it in an ever-so-slightly superior way. Slightly "I'm too educated to say xyz is annoying so I use this phrase instead".

As for nom nom...

AmIthatbad · 31/08/2012 15:01

I have never heard it used anytime in RL, only ever on MN. Doesn't bother me much.

But nom nom is crap, but I also agree that yum isn't much better

crypes · 31/08/2012 15:10

YANBU my teeth never itch about anything. Also hate the recent American saying ' i am sooo blessed' . It sounds smug and conceited and whose done the blessing.Does the blessing come from the great pie in the sky?

squoosh · 31/08/2012 15:10

'Stabby' is another one, and one that could be quite alarming if said to a stranger.

drjohnsonscat · 31/08/2012 15:18

When I stand behind anyone in a coffee shop who is saying "Can I get a such and such..." I want to kick them in the ankles.

AmIthatbad · 31/08/2012 15:33

Grin I love these threads.

Just saying...............is another one

squoosh · 31/08/2012 15:35

Oh and I loathe 'End of'.

Basically it means 'I can't think of anything else to say to support my argument but I want to have the last word and appear to be in the right so I'll say 'End of', that'll shut 'em up.'

Mymooncuprunnethover · 31/08/2012 15:49

Oh my god DrJohnson, don't get me started. I really hate that too "Can I get a skinny latte?" "Can I just grab a Coke?"

To me it sounds as if they're pretending to be in the cast of Friends

OP posts:
Shutupanddrive · 31/08/2012 15:54

YANBU, I've only ever heard it on here though

drjohnsonscat · 31/08/2012 15:56

"Not being funny but..." I'm about to say something really inappropriate or critical

elfycat · 31/08/2012 15:59

YANBU as any phase can be irritating.

I think this phrase quite often but not to say it. I always think of werewolves having itchy teeth and the consequences of it...

(note to self, stop reading dark fantasy novels)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/08/2012 16:04

I'd never heard the itchty teeth thing either.

I've always said that something has "set my teeth on edge"

professorpecked · 23/05/2019 09:44

'It’s making my fucking teeth itch!'

Really? You must be constantly on edge.
Perhaps you should speak to someone about your nerves?
