Throwing a sickie

lechatnoir · 30/08/2012 19:23

Sorry not an AIBU as I know throwing a sickie isn't right but I need tomorrow & Saturday off work but can't take annual leave & don't know what to say that will sound plausible without the need for an Oscar winning performance on the phone in the morning or when I return to work on Monday! I've honestly never chucked a sickie & I'm terrified they'll see through me.
Anyone?

My single sick day was first day of new job :o good impression there!

Tee2072 · 31/08/2012 21:44

Stealth, if she's going to lose her job anyway, what's the harm in telling the truth?

"I have a chance to go on a (whatever it is). I will be taking Friday and Saturday to do so."

StormGlass · 31/08/2012 21:45

Fair enough then GhostShip - it wasn't clear from your other post that these people had incriminated themselves!

Londonista1975 · 31/08/2012 21:56

Your colleagues must love you, Tee2072.

And please do watch Nine to Five, if you already haven't.

GhostShip · 31/08/2012 21:57

london they wouldn't have anything to worry about if they were acting properly and doing the job as they should!

Brices · 31/08/2012 22:00

I used to say I had cluster migraines linked to menstrual cycle. It was great way to increase annual leave and it was never questioned

GhostShip · 31/08/2012 22:02

Sorry but that's ridiculous ^

I really hope you aren't in a job where people depend on you.

GhostShip · 31/08/2012 22:02

And it gives women a bad name.

Tee2072 · 31/08/2012 22:03

Nine to Five the 80s movie with Dolly Parton? Yes, I've seen it. I have no idea what it has to do with what we are talking about.

I find your attitude disgusting and hope I never find out I've hired you or most of the people on this thread, if I ever get to be in position to need employees!

Honestly. What an eye opening thread...

Tee2072 · 31/08/2012 22:04

As someone who suffered from actual cluster migraines tied to my menstrual cycle, I find the fact that you lied about it abhorrent. No wonder I needed so many doctor's notes to prove I really was in bed for 3 days some months.

Londonista1975 · 31/08/2012 22:34

In the film there's a character called Roz who's a backstabbing bitch that nobody likes, I think most offices have a 'Roz' there, sadly.

Where I work, people throwing sickies is a way of life. The ones who really took the piss have had warnings - they're not very bright. As for the rest, as I'm not a manager, I have neither the inclination or time to dob them in if I think they're not being genuine. I really can't be arsed, even though it impacts on my workload. I've got better things to do. Let the managers do what they're paid to.

If ever I have to throw a sickie then the advice given by many on here will be most useful I'm sure. I knew about the 'not speaking to anyone before you call in' thing but the other stuff has been most enlightening! May pass it all on to some people I trust actually.

andallthatjargon · 31/08/2012 22:35

Jeez, we've had a girl at work just not even turn up a few times and we get told 'it's being dealt with' yet nothing happens, if you're not getting paid and it's a one off I wouldn't stress it......

GhostShip · 31/08/2012 22:37

It depends completely on your workplace actually. It's not being a backstabber at all.

In both my jobs, our work load is seriously effected.

How would you like it if your parent couldn't get a proper standard of care because someone kept ringing in sick? Oh but god forbid anyone saying anything because that's BITCHY.
It's not bitchy. It's caring about the job you're doing.

Tee2072 · 31/08/2012 22:40

Exactly Ghost.

Londonista1975 · 31/08/2012 22:49

Let the MANAGERS deal with it for fucks sake!

StealthPolarBear · 31/08/2012 22:53

Tee it may be the difference between losing her job now and in 2 months.
Though I agree some of these attitudes are Crap and I would hate to work somewhere where pulling a sickie is a way of life. Crap to manage, Crap to work alongside.

GhostShip · 31/08/2012 22:57

The managers don't know they are throwing sickies. They cannot prove it.

Why are you so arsed london? Because you do it yourself? The reason bothered is because me and my colleagues have to work double as hard as we usually do, and that's saying something. If someone rings in sick, that's customers not getting their products.
Or in my other job, that's a shift stretched. That's 3 over tired and over worked women looking after the elderly but not being able to do it probably because they're too short of staff. One person is the difference between someone going to the toilet in time, or havig to sit there in their own urine.

So shove that up your arse next time you next want to pull a sickie.

GhostShip · 31/08/2012 22:57

Sorry for crap spelling.

cerealqueen · 31/08/2012 22:58

If you must, ask for unpaid leave then you can do what you need to do with a clear conscience.
Don't say family emergency, as you may really need to ask one day.

Nancy66 · 31/08/2012 22:59

Headache.

Calls for no acting skills and won't lead to many questions.

StealthPolarBear · 31/08/2012 23:00

Cereal shed go for unpaid leave but is sure it would be denied

StormGlass · 31/08/2012 23:10

She's made her decision now, anyway.

Maybe the OP's not come back to the thread because she's found a plausible excuse and is now off exploring this future job opportunity?

maddening · 31/08/2012 23:21

go down emergency childcare route - offering immediately to make the time up this coming week?

ShellyBoobs · 31/08/2012 23:33

go down emergency childcare route...

Great scam, yes.

Get one over on the fuckers.

How dare they expect you to turn up at the fucking job they pay you to do work.

Londonista1975 · 31/08/2012 23:47

Stealth, the reason I'm so arsed as you put it is because the sanctimonious attitudes here are truly sad and it gets my goat. Yes, usually the managers can't prove it but so fucking what?

I wasn't going to mention my own sickie/sickness rate but since you ask here it is - in seven years of permanent work I've never pulled a sickie, never had any reason to yet. Had five days off for being genuinely ill and where I work now I have the best absence record of anyone in my team. Please don't presume anything about me based on what I've said here. It's terribly obnoxious.

Oh well, good luck to everyone who gets away with it. It's quite easy to do anyway.
