To think that today's episode of Thomas the Tank Engine was quite blatantly sexist?

Sodor United was playing a football match.

Male engines such as Thomas were given the exciting role of collecting the players for the match.

Emily the steam engine was given the job of taking the dirty washing to the "washing woman".

Emily decided this was not an important enough job for her to do.
So she tried to help the male engines with their jobs, which made them cross and tell her off for interfering with them and that she should be concentrating on her own job.

Then when the players arrive for their match there are no clean uniforms [as Emily has not taken the dirty washing to be cleaned].

She is glared at by her boss the male fat controller and the male players all look very put out indeed. Thomas just looks shocked by her behaviour.

Thus Emily learns that all jobs are important and she chuffs away to get the washing done and arrives back with it draped all over her [as she has been drying it on the journey back].

DS1 & 2 watched episode with interest. I sat there with mouth open thinking either I am very paranoid or this seemed to have some sort of anti-feminist subtext to it. A bit "woman know your place", don't be interfering with important men's work, don't think for yourself and don't deviate from what you are told by the male fat controller!

Yes, I know it is just a kiddie cartoon... perhaps it was just the hammering home of a female character [albeit a train engine] and her job being dealing with the dirty washing that set my teeth on edge!

Thomas has bigger issues. All Engines are girls.

Mayisout · 03/09/2012 07:28

I will look into who to complain to and how and report back if I find anything useful.

You'd be surprised by how much a tv programme can influence a child's way of thinking.

Having a talk about the Fire Service to a small group of 4 year olds when one pipes up that dragons also help put out fires (Mike the Knight). He didn't believe me when I said dragons aren't real, and can't put fires out. Even the most innocent of programmes can have a small effect on their learning especially if the think they're real.

We had to stop DS from watching it because he sobbed every time the engines crashed. Like, nearly every episode!!
I appreciate there's very little excitement in an engine's life, by the way.

Nor have I recovered from Gordon being walled up alive as a punishment.

onetiredmummy · 03/09/2012 09:31

OP you have misunderstood the beginning of the episode, I've seen this one many many times & Emily gets the job of taking the dirty washing as she is not paying attention & not listening while the other engines pick the jobs they want to do, she is too busy saying to herself she is the number 1 fan of the team. When she stops daydreaming & starts listening she realises that taking the washing is the only job left. So its her boasting that causes her to take the washing, nothing else.

She tries to take over the jobs of the other engines as she thinks those jobs are more suited to the no.1 fan of the team. Then the other engines are cross as they have all done their jobs & she hasn't, its nothing to do with gender.

Julesjones · 03/09/2012 17:07

Just watched the episode and if I would have been in charged that engine would have sent to the engine version of a nuniry

DuelingFanjo · 03/09/2012 17:25

Grin Are you 12?

Mayisout · 03/09/2012 18:25

Tyranno you are exactly the problem.

Mayisout · 03/09/2012 18:28

She tries to take over the jobs of the other engines as she thinks those jobs are more suited to the no.1 fan of the team. Then the other engines are cross as they have all done their jobs & she hasn't, its nothing to do with gender

So dipsy female engine too busy fantasisng about her relationship with macho footie players to fight for decent professional post - upshot she is landed with rubbish, low paid role. No, no gender roling there.

TyrannoWearsGoldKnickers · 03/09/2012 18:45

Confused How am I 'exactly the problem'? Just thought that was a funny turn of phrase, which wasn't even written by you, and which has more than a slight echo of the sort of thing my 12 year old cousin likes to write on facebook. So fuck off Smile

cocolepew · 03/09/2012 18:52

Julesjones has already had a thread deleted in feminism about how whether he should dump his gf* because she's gone from a 10 to a 12 and now is a big fat munter (paraphrasing)

*probably imaginary.

WillNeverGetALicence · 03/09/2012 19:16

You mean to say my OP sounds as if it were written by a 12 year old, on facebook? Shock

Well I know I'm not an academic feminist lecturer and this is not a master's dissertation but really, how rude!

Does this help to clear it up? I was quoting Jules. When stuff is in bold, generally it's a quote. If you haven't said the stuff in bold, you'll know it's not aimed at you.

FWIW I completely agree with your op!

WillNeverGetALicence · 03/09/2012 20:44

Oh, sorry. I thought the bold bit was your comment Blush

FWIW I hope you got that I wasn't really cross...
