To wonder how they afford it?

Bil and sil are in their early 20s she is sahm to 2 dcs and he works in a call centre. So I imagine they are on a modest income, less so than dh and I who both work full time. But their lifestyle is just so lavish! In the last year they have had a new kitchen and two new bathrooms, the Christmas gifts they but their dcs are unbelievable, and yesterday they posted pics on fb of their new cars, an Audi tt and merc clk!?

We don't have credit cards so I am quite ignorant of how much you can get but I imagine that this is how they have done it? Or loans, other credit?? Also insurance as nil has dodgy driving record. Can anyone shed any light on how they might be affording this?

I had a friend who had a spending problem it would be little things then escalated into bigger things her husband was the same cameras phones laptops and just 'stuff' she did tell me while drunk one night they were being hounded for council tax and a waterbill . I just don't understand how people can live like that,

worldgonecrazy · 30/08/2012 10:19

Drug dealing or she's working as an escort? I don't now why people are making those suggestions as a joke - it's a perfectly legitimate possibility, after all someone has to be doing those jobs.

Otherwise they are probably in debt up to their eyeballs.

MaisyMooCow · 30/08/2012 10:21

YANBU for wondering.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 30/08/2012 10:24

What's wrong with wondering? She wasn't being nasty about it.

Some of you are very saintly I must say!

Op I worked in a financial services role which could technically be deemed as a call centre. One year the top salesman earned nearly 100k.

Of course this was before the recession and it's now no longer there.

NurseBernard · 30/08/2012 10:26

Waste management...

BobbiFleckman · 30/08/2012 10:27

I always assume that the ferraris and lamborghinis parked outside council houses in Slough are drug dealers living at home with their mums. Subtle.

geegee888 · 30/08/2012 10:33

YANBU. I think the same about my hairdresser, who works part-time from home...

Guesses are high paid sales job, undeclared income, up to their eyes in debt, no insurance for the cars. It doesn't quite add up, and call me nosy, but in my experience, when things don't quite add up, theres some other explanation.

People are nosy though. I work as part-time as a dentist and DH earns well, but people still question why we've got 2 Mercs and a big house. The answer being the Mercs are actually 8 and 6 years old respectively and bought outright for cash at a fraction of the new price, the house started off a small ruin and we extended it, doing a lot of the work ourselves. And we're relatively high earning professionals - but we still get the finger of suspicion pointed at us, as if we're doing something wrong!

charlottehere · 30/08/2012 10:55

Maybe hes the MD of the call centre? I would want to know too. nosey

Nancy66 · 30/08/2012 11:06

The cars will both be on finance schemes - the kitchen too probably.

They could be buying Xmas gifts from somewhere like Argos and paying them off weekly.

Mrsjay · 30/08/2012 11:09

Can you pay weekly At argos Confused sorry sidetracking here

MrsMangelfanciedPaulRobinson · 30/08/2012 11:10

I have a friend who is a bit like that; I don't begrudge her anything at all but I am so damn nosey curious about how she affords it all and haven't plucked up the courage to ask her yet

She is a single parent to 3 DCs, she works part time in a job that you need a degree for but isn't renowned for it's fanastic salary. She has a big house, all beautifully furnished and decorated with Next furniture and soft furnishings. She has a new car every year. She buys clothes all the time and has her hair done a lot. Her kids are kitted out every season in new Next and Boden clothes. She literally gets rid of everything from the previous season and re-clothes all of them. Plus 3 pairs of shoes from Clarks/Start Rite each per season. Her kids also have very extravagent parties.

Don't know how she does it

SundaeGirl · 30/08/2012 11:12

Ooooh. I'm fascinated by how other people spend their money. YANBU

Nancy66 · 30/08/2012 11:16

Argos (if you spend over a certain amount) have lots of 'pay nothing for 3/6/12 month' schemes - and if you spend over £200 you can pay off in instalments

SundaeGirl · 30/08/2012 11:22

If they are my builder it's because he imports drugs. He'll get caught though, the police told me.

yesofficer · 30/08/2012 11:23

drugs? prostitution? Ah, i see some other wag has thought of the same thing...

bronzeMedal · 30/08/2012 11:29

I know someone Iike this
I've given up wondering

I would Love to know though as we scrape through and need some tips

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 30/08/2012 11:33

YANBU, I would wonder too! I would guess that they have had a windfall somewhere along the line but good salespeople can earn shedloads, especially in business-to-business sales.

StellarforStar · 30/08/2012 11:35

He's head of a secret government agency and she works as an art thief (night shift).

MrsMangelfanciedPaulRobinson · 30/08/2012 11:35

Loads have raised a very good point about good salespeople earning wads. When I worked in sales my basic salary was 15k and I trebled it some years with commission.

I wonder actually if some people that seem to have shedloads of money are doing network marketing or home-based telesales as a job on the side.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/08/2012 11:36

Obviously they are benefit cheats...

NameChangeGalore · 30/08/2012 11:39

Maybe they're on benefits? Do you think they're benefit frauds?

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 30/08/2012 11:41

She didnt say anything about benefits but bring on the goats and plasma TVs.

She wondered really if they were running up debts I fancy.

OP?

shesariver · 30/08/2012 11:42

I love all these snooty "Mind your own business" answers...if that was the case then most of AIBU would cease to exist Grin

Come on its human nature to be nosey curious?

dysfunctionalme · 30/08/2012 11:42

If they are a bit flash then maybe drugs.
If they are sensible, then I'd guess inheritance, savings or excellent planning.
If it is quite sudden, I'd suggest a win.

Bugger, wish I knew so I could do it too...

Do let us know!

Mrsjay · 30/08/2012 11:44

Maybe they're on benefits

yes cos when i was on benefits I had no room in the garages for all the BMWs and jags couldnt get moving for the buggers Grin
