dd had nitts two weeks before school ended, I got them under control combing with conditioner daily for two weeks, however a week or so after that she had them again or still had them.

I used hedrin once spray which did not even rid 1/3 of them, so did condition combing for the week after the hedrin and did the 7 day follow up, still did not get rid. I gave her a few days with nothing and then used lyclear wich got rid of them strait away and did the follow up treatment even though there was no evidance of anymore.

The lyclear worked but, she has had basicaly a week or two of the school holidyas nit free and I checked her two days ago and she was clear and so braved getting her hair trimmed today. However after combing and admiring her new hair cut with her, i noticed she has a few tiny clump with tinny nits on her hair shaft.

she has not mixed with the same child/ children over the holidays to pin point one carrier, she has been with a couple of friends from school once or twice, a few friends out of school, family, kids from the street and we have just returned from a weeks holiday. tee tree does not seem to work and the voseen shampoo leaves her hair grasy and limp. any suggestions? they areb tinny so they are not being left completly untreated, it seems to be either new infestation or a new life cycle each time.

Also treat myself every time too.

Nice n clear has no chemicals and works brilliantly

gordyslovesheep · 30/08/2012 13:47

HEDRIN DOESN'T USE CHEMICALS Grin

see - myths don't help

loopylou6 · 30/08/2012 14:02

How do you tell between an empty egg and a full one?

loopylou6 · 30/08/2012 14:04

And no hedrin does not contain any chemical at all. It works by blocking up their breathing holes, so effectively suffocates them.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 30/08/2012 14:08

An egg is dark brown, cigar shaped.

An empty egg case is much lighter white/cream/grey

In water eggs sink and havve a well defined cigar shape. Empty shells may float and kind look like flakes of scaley skin in water.

Hedrin claims to be effective against eggs - but I don't think this has been proven in trials (as is the case for nitty gritty).

The pesticides (ie toxins as opposed to those that smother) do not kill eggs.

But I would like to point out that everything in life is a chemical - even water.

gordyslovesheep · 30/08/2012 14:15

the problem of infestation I think arises from people NOT treating and then not combing effectively and believing myths like 'tea tree kills them' or ' hair straighteners kill them' or not retreating after 7 days

done PROPERLY nit treatments will work and so will combing - but combing has to be done effectively and repeatedly

OP I would actually suggest you contact Hedrin - if it hasn't worked for you there may be a reason - it may be worth discussing it with them

loopylou6 · 30/08/2012 14:22

Thanks lunatic :)

I only use head and shoulders on dd anyway due to psoriasis is the only think that keeps it under control, strangely enough so does full marks when the psoriasis is very thick aqnd scally, but doesnt seem effective on nits, ha ha.

My DD is half African. Her hair is very thick and very curly but also apparently very attractive to lice. We had a hell of a time last summer getting rid of lice. It is impossible to properly comb her hair with a nit comb so I used 1) permethrin X 3 treatments 2) ivermectin (we live in the US and so it was prescribed) 3) blow drying every night for 3 straight weeks. They eventually gave up and left. None of the rest of us had any. Hellish time. My in-laws who live in New York paid a "nit lady" to comb their kids' hair. I would have loved to have had access to a nit lady.

hi hope all o.k, not sure my messaging is working???

DollyTwat · 30/08/2012 19:02

A nit lady. That's on my list of things I want if I win the lottery!!

I comb the DDs every week with conditioner. If I find anything it's into full-on treatment mode. Hedrin is very good, but you must use it correctly, and I find that actually combing it thoroughly through the hair so that every strand is coated makes it work better. Not only does it coat all the lice, you also get to catch all the half-suffocated, struggling, dying lice in your Nitty Gritty, which is very satisfying.

What helps with the eggs is the day after using Hedrin, soaking the hair with vinegar. Let saturated hair sit for 10 minutes then wash - the vinegar dissolves the 'glue' that binds the eggs to the hair so that they wash out. You hav to give it time to work though - but afterwards you can see the difference. The first time I did it, DD2 had a very bad infestation (she doesn't scratch until she is absolutely crawling) and she had drifts of eggs close to the scalp. One vinegar treatment later they were gone, after which follow-up with Hedrin and combing cleared things.

And obviously keep hair tied back on school days - I also use really cheap hairspray every day, they don't seem to like it.

I had this problem for (felt like) years with DD. I found all the treatments worked fine but the trick was in the prevention.

Get a new plant spray bottle, 99p from the pound shop. Buy a small bottle of 99p tea tree oil from Home Bargains. Get a cheap coconut conditioner from same Home Bargains.

At home, put about 1/4 of the tea tree oil and a good squirt of conditioner into the plant spray bottle, top up with warm water and shake it to death.

Use this every morning when doing DD's hair. We've not had a nit for 5 years.

Socknickingpixie · 30/08/2012 20:49

does anybody know why the hedrin advert says no annoying combing on it? or it used to.

colette · 30/08/2012 21:02

Yes that is the nitty gritty- much more effective and quicker.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 30/08/2012 21:17

have combed through tonight with conditioner and got a good few tiny ones and some eggs. I used the glass and water just to monitor what is coming out, otherwise it is impossible to tell when they are so tiny.

I have never found the t tree to work at all, dd gets them despite so I gave up as her hair just looked terrible for no benifits.

I think what has been said up thread about not combing for long enough is probably accurate as well as having a go at the nitty gritty. If that fails then It will be the lycclear again. I find the headrin gets the nitts out but does not work effectivly on the lava or eggs around 2/3rds always remain.

I will be armed and dangerous when my nitty gritty arives.
