To only occasionally wash my 12 month old's hair

My DS was born with a load of dark hair and never lost it. When he was younger he had really bad eczema and was constantly covered in cream and ointment. This always got in his hair and made it all greasy. So we used to wash his hair every day when he had a bath.

However, now he is a bit older and his eczema is much better and so he is not such a greasy little thing all the time! Also he is no longer in his baby bath and so it is more difficult to wash his hair as he cant lean back as well and those cap things you can put on are crap.

The last time I washed his hair was a couple of weeks ago when I olive oiled his cradle cap. However, since then his hair just doesnt seem that dirty or greasy and I am thinking that it would actually probably be better for his scalp if I left it as long as possible between hair washed. He still has a bath every day with Oilatum as part of his bedtime routine.

What does everyone else do - how often do you wash your DC's hair?

At that age they get all manner of shite in their hair Grin

If you want to rinse it with just plain water, swaddle him in a towl, hold him under your arm (over the sink or bath) and just tip a couple of warm jugs of water over his head.

If you tilt him as you do it, he shouldn't get anything on him.

i only wash dd's when she gets food in it tho if it will brush out then i will just brush it out. i only get it wet with water and rinse it a bit in the bath. very rarely use shampoo on it.

she has lovely hair.

Dd is 8mo and also has oilatum baths. I always wet her hair (she sits in tub, I use a little beaker to pour water over her head), mainly to get her used to water and it being on her face etc.
I wash her hair with baby shampoo once a week max.

I also find it easier to keep.neat if I wet it, as a quick brush before she goes to bed means nice neat hair the next day.

Thanks. It does get pretty wet when he has a bath anyway, as he loves to splash around (a lot, we all end up pretty soaked!) and then I brush it when he gets out.

All my 3 had loads of hair as babies, I used only do them once a week, otherwise it made their eczema a lot worse.
I did treat and get rid of the cradle cap before dropping to weekly hair washing, once I got rid of it I switched to the kids shampoo and conditioner in one no tears stuff, the conditioner part made a huge difference and we didn't get the cradle cap back.

I wash DS (18 months) and DD (3.5)'s hair 1-2 times a week. I only really do it if it's got lots of food or knots in it. DD has lovely long blonde curly hair which is a total pain to wash, comb and look after and if I wash it too much it gets dry and knotty.
So IMO YANBU!

I still don't wash my 3 year old's hair that often. He gets eczema on his scalp very badly as soon as I even think about putting soap on it, so it get's rinsed with Balneum bath oil every few days and olive oiled once a month and maybe washed once a month.

I keep it very short as it's very thick.
