AIBU to expect someone to mention that they couldn't flush the toilet

We had house guests recently and on the day they were leaving they decided to leave earlier than originally planned.

A little bit of background info, we have fairly recently moved house, we have 2 toilets up stairs, 1 in the main bathroom and a seperate wc, when anyone comes to stay we mention not use the toilet in the main bathroom as it doesn't flush very well and sometimes won't flush at all. We also don't put any toilet paper in the room as no one uses it.

I clean the toilet that we don't use once a week just to keep it fresh, so 2 days after the guests left I went to clean the bathroom toilet only to be greeted with a massive shit in the bowl.

Now I don't care that some one forgot and used the wrong toilet, but to have a bowel movement and then not be able to flush it, you'd mention it right.

It seems incredibly rude to not mention it to your host, surely it was obvious I would find it, I understand that maybe they were embarrassed but again isn't obvious that I would happen across it.

It's not their fault you have a toilet that doesn't work. Seems like it has been like that for a while? It's your responsibility to fix it.

Born2bemild · 29/08/2012 18:56

yabu. Sometimes they come back after 5 mins. Either put a sign or get it fixed.

Snog · 29/08/2012 19:00

YABU
Fix the toilets in your house. If not you should be embarrassed and not your guests imo

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 29/08/2012 19:03

Definitely fix the toilet

I am shuddering slightly at the thought them not wiping themselves as you don't keep loo paper there.

TeapotsInJune · 29/08/2012 19:20

Oh they probably had tissues in their bag!

fridakahlo · 29/08/2012 19:28

See, this is why turds should be, if at all possible ,saved for the comfort of ones own home, where you know any little quirks you may have to deal with, as well as feeling fully assured that there will be toilet roll somewhere near at hand.

AnyoneforTurps · 29/08/2012 19:30

Wise words, fridakahlo but if you are a house guest for long enough, something's got to give Wink

madonnawhore · 29/08/2012 19:36

How horrible and embarrassing for your guests. This is my worst nightmare too.

I hate it when you go to people's houses and the loo or shower doesn't work properly and you always end up going in the wrong one or turning the shower on in the wrong way, or the sink tap gets stuck or whatever. It's awful.

Having to announce you've done a massive turd that's now stuck is so undignified and mortifying. It's perfectly reasonable IMO to do a shit in a toilet. It's unreasonable to expect people who aren't familiar with the quirks of your house's plumbing to remember which bloody loo their supposed to use.

YABU!

Thanks for your replies. It is obviously me that's BU, I except that.

It was indeed a very close relative.

Yes they did definatly know it was out of order but obviously forgot (I honestly don't mind that they forgot only that they didn't mention it), my DB who is currently renovating the house of the poo depositer is soon to replace the entire bathroom in my house, it however can't be done until other work has been done first like replacing the bathroom window and we have to wait till our fitting slot, would seem a little redundant to mend a toilet which will be replaced very soon anyway when there are 2 other working toilets in the house.

Thanks for feedback

It would have been decent of them to mention it, but I can see why that was a conversation they didn't want to have! They could have left a note though if they couldn't stand the mortification of telling you face to face.

In their shoes I think I would have furtively fished it out myself and transferred it to the other loo to be flushed. I certainly wouldn't have just left it to fester - that really is manky.

If you're having more guests between now and the new bathroom it might be a good idea to tape a warning label to the loo seat so no other poor forgetful bugger does the same Grin

Yokel · 29/08/2012 21:40

Visionary, you would gave 'furtively fished it out'?! Wtf? And walked down the landing with it nestled in your hand? Boggling.

HissyByName · 29/08/2012 23:10

Who was it on here that did.a.number.2 at a house party, couldn't flush it, so fished it out and chucked it out of the window.

Onto the roof of the glass conservatory full of guests....

Classic

VisionaryGoat · 30/08/2012 06:06

Better to fish my own poo out of the broken toilet and dispose of it into the working toilet than just run off and leave it for my hostess to deal with once it has festered for a few days I think - possibly I am just weird though.

I would have mummified it in toilet paper before I tried to carry it anywhere, and possibly popped it into a plastic carrier bag for the trip to the other loo if that makes it a less peculiar thing to do. I certainly wouldn't have just wandered out onto the landing randomly brandishing a lump of shit in my hand. That would be worse than leaving it there.

I hadn't heard the story about pitching the poo out onto the glass conservatory roof - excellent Grin

I do remember the one about someone who couldn't get the loo to flush after her date had gone to work telling her to just close the door behind her when she left. So she put her unflushable poo in a plastic bag to take with her... and then left it on the kitchen table - and of course had no key to get back in and reclaim her turd, so had to leave it there for him to find!

There are some very entertaining poo stories on MN - must be a thread in classics on the subject surely...
