That's unusual...they always do home visits here.

TraineeBabyCatcher · 28/08/2012 13:03

Theyre now doing home visits for our school, i really like the idea but unfortunately DS wont be able to have his as we are away the week theyre doing them. Though his key worker is my mums friend so we're gonna see if she can rework it to another time.

dontcallmehon · 28/08/2012 13:03

I would like a home visit, mainly so I can chat to dd's new teacher, but they don't do them here either.

Virgil · 28/08/2012 13:04

No home visits in this area either

RobotLover68 · 28/08/2012 13:23

I've never heard of home visits - is this new? (youngest ds is 9)

wineoclocktimeyet · 28/08/2012 13:51

They dont do them here, DS2 met his teacher in a 1 to 1 in his new classroom before he started thank goodness she says looking around the tip that is her living room

LucyLastik · 28/08/2012 13:52

I start my new job next week and I will be going out on home visits!

WorraLiberty · 28/08/2012 13:53

It's not a new thing

My DS2 had a home visit before he started the school Nursery (as did DS1) and he's going into year 9 next week.

CappuccinoCarrie · 28/08/2012 14:08

Never had a home visit for playgroup or school, or any 121 time, they just started, and they've been fine.

Bongaloo · 28/08/2012 14:08

I'm glad not to have them.
I'd feel obliged to run the hoover round.

And I'm sure DD would hide anyway.

RaisinDEtre · 28/08/2012 14:13

School yes, pre school settings nope never heard of them

HoratiaWinwood · 28/08/2012 14:16

Nope, neither. I'd rather have him start actual school in the actual classroom.

You could invite the teacher/keyworker over for tea or Sunday lunch and see how that goes down...? If she doesn't have a life of her own demanding family set-up she might be interested.

Jodidi · 28/08/2012 14:17

Never heard of home visits and my mum was a reception teacher for 35 years. She never did them, we never had them when we started, dd1 didn't have one and dd2 will probably not have one (will be going to the same primary that dd1 went to). It's a good job too as dp and I would both be at work when they would want to come. Dd2 will have to go to her first day of school with the childminder Shock I'm sure it will all be fine.

bronze · 28/08/2012 14:21

Never had a home visit and have three at primary. Three schools too

BackforGood · 28/08/2012 14:30

Why would you want one ?

DorothyGherkins · 28/08/2012 14:31

So I dont really understand (my mothering status has long been redundant.) What happens on these visits, what are they looking for? Is it for the parents/childs benefit, or is it for the schools? Or are they just being nosey and wanting to see what sort of house you live in, and looking for a few clues what goes on there? Just curious..........

Goofus · 28/08/2012 14:37

We have them and I don't really 'get it'.

They come over and have a chat about school, things you already know about if you've read the paperwork from the school. They brought one of those bookstart packs with them and had a little chat with DD but I didn't really think it was necessary.

blisterpack · 28/08/2012 14:37

Depends on the school isn't it? DD1's school had it but not DD2's. I think it's a good thing. Seeing the teacher in her home environment made it easy for DD1 to not think of the teacher as a stranger and go inside happily on the first day. Wasn't the case with DD2, she took some time to become familiar with the teacher.

MarysBeard · 28/08/2012 14:39

Never heard of it.

Triggles · 28/08/2012 15:38

Unfortunately they do home visits here too. A right pain in the bum IMO. DS3 is quite happy to go to "school" and I can't imagine anything the teacher will take away from seeing our home, other than the fact that our vacuum is sub-par and needs to be replaced. Hmm

lljkk · 28/08/2012 15:40

Home visit for DS starting school: 10 minutes, max they were here. "I said these are my concerns", they said thanks & went to next appointment. Almost complete non-event!

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 28/08/2012 15:41

AFAIK they want to check you live where you live, they want a chance to introduce themselves to you and your child. It possibly helps the child to see a new person on their home turf, and it helps the staff to get an bit of an idea of the home environment.

TheUnsinkableTitanic · 28/08/2012 15:42

Dorothy, reason is for teacher to get to know the child. They will build up a picture of the child on a 1:1 basis and it can really help the settling in process ie teacher saying to a distraught child "will we go and look at a book about tigers, just like the one you have at home"

Never had 1 either, but think it is a great idea

TheUnsinkableTitanic · 28/08/2012 15:43

cross post with a few people oops!

2rebecca · 28/08/2012 15:46

Never had home visits, seems a waste of time for the teacher. We are able bodied and could go and see her which would be a better use of her time as she could see more people in a day.
We just all had a big "new parents" meeting which was pretty useless.
